[1988] (St. Pölten, Austria)
1 game (196 pieces) : wood, acrylic, metal ; various sizes in wooden box 7 x 45 x 21 cm. + 2 sheets (59 x 42 cm. folded to 15 x 42 cm.)
Exhibited: "Les jouets et la tradition moderniste = Toys and the modernist tradition", Centre canadien d'architecture, Dec. 15, 1993-May 1, 1994.
Designed in the late 1980s by Vienna architects Maria Auböck and János Káráz, together with Axel Ott, then a student, Stadtbaukasten is an urban planning toy. Along with the traditional shapes (squares, rectangles) found amongst its finely-finished wood pieces are some unusual and distinctly modern ones. In addition to these, acrylic and metal components provide for the suggestion of water as well as for the inclusion of specific architectural structures in the urban landscape. Intended to permit more than one player to participate, the toy reflects the awareness of its three designers of the importance of teamwork in the planning and building of cities. A larger version was produced for the exhibition "Geburt einer Hauptstadt" (June 17 - September 17, 1988, St. Pöltens), in which children of the public were allowed to play with the set while a video camera filmed the various phases of construction.
