"The Time-Image" is the second volume of Gilles Deleuze's work on cinema, published in 1985 by Éditions de Minuit. In this essay, Deleuze explores how cinema evolved after the Second World War, moving from sensorimotor situations to pure optical and sonic situations, notably with neorealism. He analyzes films by directors such as Ozu, Mankiewicz and the musical, showing that the time-image does not eliminate the movement-image, but reverses their relationship of subordination. Instead of time being a measure of movement, movement becomes the consequence of a direct presentation of time, illustrated by techniques like false fitting. This work is essential for understanding the transformation of cinematic language and the way in which time is represented on screen.
