Summary:

This report was funded jointly by the Future Observatory at the Design Museum and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the SOM Foundation, and with the support of the Spatial Practices Department at Central St Martins. The work collated here is a summary of the research carried out by Material Cultures into the relationship between the forestry industry in the UK and the built environment, from publicly to privately owned woodland. Our work has investigated the opportunities for resilient treescapes and regenerative land management practices in the UK. We highlight the opportunities a transition to more diverse treescapes would offer a sustainable construction industry through the supply of low embodied carbon materials. Our research shows that to support biodiversity, society and local economies, UK land management policies should aim to implement a Mosaic Landscape, in which different habitats and land uses are closely interspersed. This report seeks to identify barriers and opportunities, and to bridge knowledge gaps in the transition away from industrialised monocultures and toward regenerative land management practices…
