Summary:

"Fatehpur Sikri is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. It was built in the space of 14 years (1570 to 1584) by a monarch with a liking for architecture, then abandoned for no apparent reason. Today it is a frozen piece of history. Visitors strolling through it with this book as their guide can take themselves back to India's golden age and imagine the Mogul court's magnificence and pomp bringing to life the buildings that stand mute today. In fact the whole complex is a mighty allegorical machine intended to express the unnuttered: Akbar's anxiety and longing to join the pantheon of the gods. The main areas of the palace, the Diwan-i-Amm, the Ibadat Khana, the Anup Talao and the Diwan-i-Khass have no specific function; they were shaped by rites focused on the character of the king. The fanciful architectural forms are not due to mere whim, but draw upon popular Indian culture." "This book suggests that these red sandstone monuments are a synthesis of the nomadic world of the meadows and the sedentary world of India. The palace is laid out like a camp built in stone, but the fine individual buildings are accurate translations of wooden rural architecture into stone. Fatehpur Sikri is the supreme expression of a happy moment of political and religious synthesis: it speaks directly to the Indian heart, but is a monument for all mankind."--BOOK JACKET.
