Lavishly illustrated in color, this book documents a spectacular collection of archaeological and artistic treasures, covering the entire range of Egyptian art -- from Old Kingdom works of the third millennium B.C. to works of the Greco-Roman period ending in A.D. 300. The collection of objects from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, many never previously shown in print, range from architectural elements of a royal palace and funerary chapel to delicate jewelry and fine textiles.

In an introductory essay, David Silverman documents the major expeditions conducted throughout Egypt and in Nubia and summarizes the new information gleaned about ancient Egyptian civilization. Donald Redford then defines a historical context for the objects illustrated. Chapters on art, architectural monuments, and artifacts each begin with an essay by a recognized expert in the field, explaining the historical and sociological context for the objects shown.

One of the most unusual architectural monuments presented is the Old Kingdom tomb chapel of Kapure, which includes thirty individual blocks with painted relief scenes that illustrate the funerary ceremonies and a monumental false door. Architectural elements from a Ramesside palace and tomb are shown, as well as reliefs from New Kingdom and later temples. The final chapter focuses on artifacts of daily life -- jewelry, vessels, mirrors, and amulets -- and artifacts of the afterlife.

The collection in Searching for Ancient Egypt constitutes a major traveling exhibition organized by the Dallas Museum of Art, which will begin in September 1997, and is scheduled to visit Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Omaha, and Birmingham, and other cities to be announced.
