Wildwood Park study / [Carl Nelson].
[Ottawa] : [Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation], 1985.
1 volume (various pagings) : illustrations ; 28 cm
This is a study of the architectural and territorial transformations of a model community, Wildwood Park, over a period of thirty-seven years. Wildwood was built in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1946-47 by the Bird Construction Company, Ltd., and was designed by the architectural firm of Green, Blankstein, and Russell. The Wildwood Park plan is the first Canadian model community patterned after Radburn, New Jersey, designed by Clarence Stein and Henry Wright. The Radburn idea employed five design characteristics which were an outgrowth of the garden city movement in England: 1. The Superblock form; 2. Specialized roads planned and built for one use instead of for all uses; 3. Complete separation of pedestrians and the automobile; 4. Houses with living and sleeping rooms facing a park, and with service toward access roads; 5. Park as a backbone of the neighbourhood.
