Le champ de l'image
In interwar German and American art photography with, for example, August Sander, Walker Evans, and Berenice Abbott, a form of "documentary" imagery was developed which avoided traditional artistic conventions in order to get closer to documentary photography. The thesis attempts to analyze this paradox: how could an almost mechanical grasp of reality be conceived as the safest way to make photography an art? How could such photographers have claimed to take things as they are and yet claim authorial status? Why has the document grown, in the eyes of contemporaries, to artistic status?
