**OUT OF PRINT / EPUISÉ** Urban places can only be considered a success if they are being used. Here an overview of thriving squares and urban spaces in European architecture. What would a town be without squares? It is precisely these open spaces which give the built areas their meaning, function and character. Squares provide a breathing space within the structure of the city, separating and joining. They are the stage for urban actors, the heart of the political and social life of an urban community, and as such designing new squares or redesigning existing ones is one of the most delightful tasks for architects, urban planners and landscape architects. Open-air and multi-functional, squares are always unique and more strongly defined by their surroundings than buildings. This book presents the best and most attractive squares which have been presented in individual Topos magazines since 1993. It contains successful examples from Barcelona, Lyon, Reykjavik, Verona, Dublin and Vienna. Some of the examples, for instance, the Schouwerburgplein in Rotterdam, the Place des Terraux in Lyon or the Gustav-Adolf-Torg in Malmö were much discussed even criticized. Yet they bear the confident signature of their designer and a distinctive interplay of material and form, art and commerce, work and fun.

Summary:
New ideas and concepts for urban architecture and landscape architecture from the Netherlands: this survey takes stock of the current situation. In any discussion on contemporary landscape architecture, visionary urban development or revolutionary building, it is impossible to overlook the Netherlands. The experts look to this small, flat country which constantly seeks to exceed its narrow boundaries by creating new space. The Netherlands is crowded and so it is hardly surprising that architects endeavour to "stack" landscapes and functions as the Dutch pavilion in the Expo 2000, designed by MVRDV demonstrated. Here, new ideas and concepts in architecture and landscape design fall on the fertile ground. Rem Koolhaas had prepared the way: nothing must stay as it is, even the open countryside and the towns can be changed, moulded, shaped. The Dutch are experts at building in the sea, on polders, on man-made islands, and on former harbour areas as in Rotterdam Kop van Zuid. Architecture and landscape architecture are not only a matter of public interest but they are ongoing processes in the Netherlands, and this is reflected in many of the projects in this book which include the gardens and squares of West 8, the Museumsplein in Amsterdam, the town planning in Zutphen or Apeldoorn. The examples have all been published in different contexts in Topos, but this is the first time that they have been collated to provide an illuminating overview of contemporary Dutch landscape architecture.

Summary:

Summary:
Visual artist and theorist Suzanne Anker opened the 2007 international online conference Bioscience and Visual Culture with the following words: "The ubiquitous employment of digital technologies within the practices of research science and medicine, architecture and design, filmmaking and video production, as well as the visual and performing arts, has set ajar a multiplex of communication networks which crisscross traditional boundaries." This volume documents the virtual symposium, which was hosted by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. and the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Herein, artists, scientists, historians, ethicists, curators, sociologists and writers discuss the myriad intersections between visual culture and the biosciences. The impressive list of international panelists includes Carl Djerassi of Stanford University, Troy Duster of NYU, Marvin Heiferman of SVA, David Freedberg of Columbia University, artist Catherine Chalmers, Art in America Senior Editor Nancy Princenthal and writer Andrew Solomon.
