Summary:
Beyond books covers the intense activity of printer Alighiero Boetti, from his artists’ books to posters and exhibition invitations, taking a look along the way at his long association with newspaper “Il Manifesto”. Boetti was both typesetter and director of his work, shifting from the role of creator to graphic artist to rewrite and redesign the informative materials on his work. And this is how the artists’ books were born. A limited number of books with hard red cloth covers – Boetti’s trademark – linked by one common feature: they were pieces of real craftsmanship and a fusion of the traditions of printing and art.

Summary:
This study catalogues and illustrates all of the artist’s books that Allan Kaprow published to accompany his happenings, from his first artist’s book in 1962 to his final anthology projects of the 1990s: a total of 35 books published over 40 years. Although Kaprow was the acknowledged pioneer of the happening from the 1950s on, he is less often recognized as a pioneer in the genre of artist’s books. Nonetheless, from the start Kaprow produced what he described as “activity booklets”--publications intended to function as tools to help people understand and experience such performances. He likened these booklets to “musical scores”: vehicles of opportunity rather than documents of past events. But the graphic layout of his books, the originality of their structure, the literary character of their texts and their aesthetic quality as objects elevates them from ostensibly practical scores to primary examples of first-generation book art.

Summary:
Anselmo, Boetti, Calzolari, Fabro, Kounellis, Mario and Marisa Merz, Paolini, Pascali, Penone, Pistoletto, Prini, Zorio: the protagonists of the most important italian artistic movement in the second half of the XX century are introduced not by their “traditional” works, but from a particular point of view : their publishing production. These artists’ books were conceived, built and re-invented as works of art themselves, and some of them had a very important role in defining the aims and beliefs of the whole artistic movement. A detailed introduction analyses “diagonally” people, times, places and texts involved in the Arte Povera movement and their mutual relationships; then, each artist is individually presented through his books and one-person exhibitions, along with several photos of the mentioned documents. The book is completed by an accurate chronology of the collective exhibitions (1966-2005) and a detailed bibliography of the books, essays and articles about the "poveristi” (1966-2006).
