Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London's Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world's top architects to design summer pavilions - temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a show-place for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists. The projects completed or envisaged include the work of: Zaha Hadid, 2000; Daniel Libeskind, 2001; Toyo Ito, 2002; Oscar Niemeyer, 2003; MVRDV, 2004 (un-realised); Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond, 2005; Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, 2006; Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, 2007; Frank Gehry, 2008; SANAA, 2009; Jean Nouvel, 2010; and, other works such as Zaha Hadid's temporary 2006 installation Lilas are included in the book as well.

The latest architecture and design of restaurants and bars, from L.A. to Tokyo, is the focus of this book. Whether the challenge is merely placing furniture in a simple space, or an ambitious structural project, restaurants and bars are the sites of our most expressive architecture; more ephemeral than larger facilities or entire buildings, they are more apt to capture the mood of the times. From a skyscraper rooftop in Bangkok to a beachfront in Brazil, here are places where design, architecture, food and drink come together in inspiring combinations ranging from minimalist to extravagantly Baroque.

Tadao Ando faced a new constructional challenge with the renovation of two of Venice’s iconic buildings. Approached by French magnate François Pinault to renovate two disparate but equally high-profile and challenging Venetian structures to house his collection of contemporary art—the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana—Ando employed his signature process to produce two elegant interiors from highly complicated historic sites. The overall effect of the two different renovations is a harmony of old and new, of history and innovation.

Summary:
This monograph highlights the global works of Vinoly. For nearly half a century Rafael Vinoly has been driven by the belief that the responsibility of architecture is to elevate the public realm. While his early work in Argentina transformed the landscape of his native country, his first major international projects - the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York and the International Forum in Tokyo - established Vinoly as a global presence in architecture, whose buildings sustain a structural originality that transcends passing fads. This monograph features a chronological sampling of Vinoly's best work in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The large and small-scale projects encompass courthouses, private residences, athletic facilities, performing arts centres, museums and educational buildings. Illustrated with photographs, plans and drawings, and accented by Vinoly's personal reflection on his career, this volume brings together the achievements of one of today's most internationally acclaimed architects.

Summary:
Over the years, talented architects have occasionally indulged themselves with the challenge of designing small but perfectly formed buildings. Today, with reduced budgets, many architects have turned in a more focused way to creating works that may be in diminutive in their dimensions, but which are definitely big when it comes to trendsetting ideas. Whether in Japanese cities, where large sites are hard to come by, or at the frontier between art and architecture, small buildings present many advantages, and push their designers to do more with less.
