Summary:
This work presents a compilation of materials with which seventeen artists reflect on the gap between architecture as idea, architecture on paper, and its actual use - in other words, the 'afterwards' of construction. The project distinguishes four possible typologies of the afterwards: back, interior, around and demolition. These typologies of the afterwards would in this way come to compose a kind of heterotopia of architecture. It is illustrated with works by Vangelis Vlahos,Terence Gower, Pia Ronicke, Xavier Arenos, Gregor Graf, Mounir Fatmi, Xavier Monteys, Heidrun Holzfeind, Tim Etchells, Laurent Malone/ Dennis Adams, Didier Bay, Jordi Colomer, Alexander Apostol, Chris Mottalini, Lara Almarcegui, Jan Tichy and Clay Ketter.

Summary:
Images of ruins may represent the raw realities created by bombs, natural disasters, or factory closings, but the way we see and understand ruins is not raw or unmediated. Rather, looking at ruins, writing about them, and representing them, are acts framed by a long tradition. This unique interdisciplinary collection traces discourses about and representations of ruins(...)

Rather, looking at ruins, writing about them, and representing them, are acts framed by a long tradition. This unique interdisciplinary collection traces discourses about and representations of ruins from a richly contextualized perspective. In their introduction, Julia Hell and Andreas Schönle discuss how European modernity emerged partly through a confrontation with the ruins of the premodern past.

Summary:
Restoration in all its forms is entangled in many contemporary theoretical debates and problems. This book examines together the linked philosophies of the different arts of preserving and uncovering the past: the restoration of buildings, conservation of works of art, and editing of literary works to retrieve their original or intended texts. By investigating a series of recent crises in each of these areas, this publication shows how their underlying justifications relate closely to one another.

Summary:
This book is an account of the nexus between place and power, investigating how the built forms of architecture and urban design act as mediators of social practices of power. Explored through a range of theories and case studies, this examination shows how lives are 'framed' within the clusters of rooms, buildings, streets and cities. These silent framings of everyday life also mediate practices of coercion, seduction and authorization as architects and urban designers engage with the articulation of dreams; imagining and constructing a 'better' future in someone's interest.

Summary:

Summary:
Collected here for the first time are Liam Gillick’s major fictional texts: ‘McNamara Papers’, Ibuka’, ‘Discussion Island/Big Conference Centre’, ‘The Winter School’, with Erasmus is Late and Literally No Place. Within each history and the utopias and alternative visions of society envisioned by writers, filmmakers, philosophers, and scientists are presented and speculated on, often through the fictionalised voices of secondary historical characters. Traversing genres of fiction and critical discourse, ideas are explored in a nonlinear, open-ended discursive format, in which the textual structure mirrors the structuring of the presented ideas. In each text Gillick’s concern is to explore complex, paradoxical historical moments and the ideologies that shaped, reflecting on how the redundant utopian elements of the past continue to structure contemporary society and remain impulses within speculations of our post-utopian future.
