Summary:
Based on a 2009 symposium at the Delft University of Technology, the fifteen essays in Architecture as a Craft present architecture as a self-contained craft discipline. Social demands upon architects are increasing, for instance that of sustainability, with strict requirements imposed before designs are even considered. The book's contributors argue that the structure and integrity of designs – their craft – must underlie projects before external influences play a role. The architect's craft is approached from three perspectives: the outlook and position of the architect, the composition of designs, and the choice of building materials, emphasising how architects can communicate and justify their craft-based choices.

Summary:
Studying the relation of architecture to society, this book explains the manner in which the discipline of architecture adjusted itself in order to satisfy new pressures by society. Consequently, it offers an understanding of contemporary conditions and phenomena, ranging from the ubiquity of landmark buildings to the celebrity status of architects. It concerns the period spanning from 1966 to the first years of the current century – a period which saw radical change in economy, politics, and culture and a period in which architecture radically transformed, substituting the alleged dreariness of modernism with spectacle.

Summary:
Bringing together the reflections of an architectural theorist and a philosopher, this book encourages philosophers and architects, scholars and designers alike, to reconsider what they do as well as what they can do in the face of challenging times. It does so by exploring the notion that architecture and design can make for a distinctive form of ethical investigation. The book is less concerned with absolutist understandings of the two components of ethics, a theory of ‘the good’ and a theory of ‘the right’, than with remaining open to multiple relations between ideas about the built environment, design practices and the plurality of kinds of human subjects (inhabitants, individuals and communities) accommodated by buildings and urban spaces. This book aims to change the way people commonly think about ethics, not only in relation to the built environment, but to themselves, their ways of thinking and modes of behaviour.

Summary:
Combining place and fiction in an imaginative interpretation of 10 sites in the city of London, CJ Lim takes well-known institutions, epochs and lifestyles in the British capital and renders them fantastic in a string of architectural short stories. The medium is an intersection of paper assemblages with short stories. The stories have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Victoria and Albert Museum but are collected for the first time in a single volume, laid out as they were designed to be seen as one phantasmogoric city vision. Painstakingly constructed, the stories assemble a sequence of improbable marriages between architecture and story, encompassing a retelling of the Three Little Pigs at Smithfield, a dating agency at Battersea, and a ringed transport system manifesting as a celestial river over the great metropolis. Drawing on a wealth of literary symbolism from Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland to Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities and imbued with humour and irony, the book builds on London’s rich mix of extravagance and fictive tradition.

In Travels in the History of Architecture, Robert Harbison provides an engaging and concise companion to the great themes and aesthetic movements in architecture from antiquity to the present day. The book begins its journey with the great temples of the Egyptians and the shrines of Classical Greece and Rome and then provides a complete survey of architecture through the present day. Each chapter of this dynamic and approachable volume focuses on a movement in architectural history, including Byzantine, Baroque, Mannerism, Historicism, Functionalism, and Deconstruction. Unique to this work is Harbison’s wide-ranging approach, which draws on references and examples outside of architecture—from literature, art, sculpture, and history—to further illustrate and contextualize the themes and ideas of each period.

The fifth in a series documenting the Edward P. Bass Visiting Fellowship in Architecture at Yale, this book chronicles the collaboration of Fellow Chuck Atwood, the former vice chairman of Harrah's board of directors, with Davenport Visiting Professor David M. Schwarz, assisted by Brook Denison and Darin Cook. Focusing on Las Vegas's lack of pedestrianism, they asked the students to investigate vital urban sites around the world and then apply theses lessons learned to the automobile-centric Strip. The students met with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, Harrah's CEO Gary Loveman, and private-equity managers David Bonderman and Marc Rowman as they devised ways to transform the world's premiere themed playground into a livable and pedestrian-oriented city.

Summary:
In today's turbulent times few subjects deserve a closer scrutiny than the interactions between violence and constructed environment. Modernity's contradictory histories laid bare the fact that it is impossible to consider architecture simply a benign, passive victim of humanity's violent vices. Built space is as capable of incarnating violent acts as enacting them, disciplining and silencing the subject in the process. In this volume, thinkers of contemporary architectural theory make manifest the intricacies of interrelations between architecture and violent events. Employing a wide variety of perspectives and methodological approaches, the authors examine some of the most dramatic and unexpected instances of these vexing relations.
