Summary:
Architecture is often seen as the art of a thinking mind that arranges, organises and establishes relationships between the parts and the whole. It is also seen as the art of designing spaces, which we experience through movement and use. Conceptual ordering, spatial and social narrative are fundamental to the ways in which buildings are shaped, used and perceived. Examining and exploring the ways in which these three dimensions interact in the design and life of buildings, this intriguing book will be of use to anyone with an interest in the theory of architecture and architecture's relationship to the cultural human environment.

Public space is changing. Where in earlier times people met each other on a public square it seems that now a hotel lobby is the desired designation. This change in the notion of what the public area exactly is forms one of the most crucial themes in current architectural debate – Where are shared spaces presently to be found where people can meet each other and develop and share a public meaning? This illustrated anthology brings together an impressive collection of writings by 36 leading architects, who have over the last fifty years presented different positions in relation to the debate over the idea and limits of what the public is, or should be. Contributors include: Aldo Rossi, Rem Koolhaas, Matthias Ungers, Daniel Libeskind, Peter Zumthor, Alison and Peter Smithson, Rob Krier, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos and Jean Nouvel.

Drawing on theories of place, consumption and identity, Sarah Chaplin details the evolution of the love hotel in urban Japan since the 1950s. Love hotels emerged in the late 1950s following a ban of licensed prostitution, then were extremely popular in the 1970s, were then legislated against in the 1980s and are now perceived as ‘leisure’, ‘fashion’ or ‘boutique’ hotels. Representing a timely opportunity to capture and evaluate the dying manifestations of an important era in Japanese social and cultural history, this book provides a critical account of the love hotel as a unique typology. It considers its spatial, aesthetic, semiotic, and locational denotations and connotations, which results in a richly nuanced cultural reading.

Architecture and designed landscapes serve as grand mnemonic devices that record and transmit vital aspects of culture and history. Spatial Recall casts a broad net over the concept of memory and gives a variety of perspectives from twelve internationally noted scholars, practicing designers, and artists such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Adriaan Geuze, Susan Schwartzenberg, Georges Descombes and Esther da Costa Meyer. Essays range from broad topics of message and audience to specific ones of landscape production. Beautifully illustrated, Spatial Recall is a comprehensive view of memory in the built environment, how we have read it in the past, and how we can create it in the future.

The essays in this collection extend from her 1969 text, ‘On Pop Art, Permissiveness and Planning’ (written three years before the publication of Venturi, Scott Brown and Izenour’s seminal book Learning From Las Vegas) to ‘Towards an Active Socioplastics’ from 2007, which offers an overview of Scott Brown’s education and the gestation of her key architectural and urban ideas. In between, eight other essays from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, offer insights not only into Scott Brown’s evolving architectural imagination but touch upon the changing collective ideas and aspirations of design education and practice. The collection is bookended by two additional texts by Scott Brown, a foreword and an afterword, addressing specifically the act of writing about architecture.

Summary:
Work from the AA’s Diploma Unit 2 fuses two seemingly mutually exclusive paradigms in recent architectural discourse, mediating between technological performance as well as the manipulation of grounds, defined here as the external and internal circulatory systems that structure social organisations. In the process, the unit defines a new social agenda and aesthetic philosophy for transforming established design strategies, and lends conventional notions of sustainable design a new civic and cultural relevance. The projects are all either located within or influenced by a Brazilian context, rich in sculptural, variegated landscapes and African as well as indigenous Indian influences. Innovative design proposals shown in this book illustrate symbiotic relationships between urban society, environmental conditioning and landscape by articulating ground organisations to mediate and synchronise both environmental and cultural flows.
