Dans toute ville, il est des vides et des pleins plus ou moins figés qui en minéralisent l'histoire muette. Ainsi en va-t-il du 7e arrondissement de Paris, et en son cœur un monument, l’un des plus beaux de la capitale : les Invalides. Proche de l'École militaire, cet édifice qui est aussi un hôpital et un musée confère au quartier son nom et sa teinte distinctive : sa majesté. Une singulière « beauté défensive » émane des voies rayonnant à partir de lui, rempart contre l’Histoire et ses troubles.
