Summary:
This small yet densely packed and intriguingly designed guide revisits and reconsiders more than 70 built works by Eduardo Souto de Moura, selected by the architect himself. Intended as a reference book, it also shows how his architecture changes from north to south in Portugal. Each project is given with objective data as a complement to the reader’s journey, such as the circumstances of the commission, stages of the design process, simultaneous projects, contingencies of construction, and even subsequent changes to the project. The texts are based on the architect’s own writings, interviews, and lectures, thereby helping to communicate the true essence of each building.

Summary:
While he was working to complete the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mine Museum in southern Norway in 2016, Swiss architect Peter Zumthor asked Norwegian architectural historian Mari Lending to engage in a dialogue about the project. In meandering, impressionistic style, and drawing on their favorite writers, such as Johann Peter Hebel, Stendhal, Nabokov, and T. S. Eliot, their exchanges explore how history, time, and temporalities reverberate across Zumthor’s oeuvre. Looking back, Zumthor ponders on how a feeling of history has informed his attempts at emotional reconstruction by means of building, from architectural interventions in dramatic landscapes to his design for the redevelopment of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which conceived the building on a suitably grand urban scale.

Summary:
Over the past years, Dhaka-based architect Kashef Chowdhury has become renowned for a body of work that responds with great sensitivity to places, local circumstances, and the demands of a building's users. At the 2016 International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Chowdhury presented four recent projects his firm URBANA has realised in Bangladesh in a fascinating exhibition which he has designed with equal sensitivity and care. The labyrinth is an age-old space of intrigue, discovery and accident, which has fascinated architects throughout history. For his installation in Venice, Chowdhury challenged spatial perceptions by a simple turn: the labyrinth - which hides and blocks - is suddenly made transparent. Notwithstanding the obvious reference to Venetian glass, the labyrinth retains, or even accentuates, a sense of spatial disorientation.

Summary:
"POROSIS" invites an intense look at the work of the new figure in the Porto School of Architecture, after Eduardo Souto Moura and Álvaro Siza. The singularity of Nuno Brandão Costas work lies in his sustained attention to the primary elements of construction and its plasticity. Through new materials and techniques, his work has built upon the clarity of traditional Portuguese architecture. André Cepeda travelled for some months photographing the work of Nuno Brandão Costa. More a sensitive approach than a literal document, this book is a powerful testimony of Portuguese architecture nowadays, through the surprising work of this architect. The images, by one of the most highly regarded Portuguese photographers, brilliantly challenge the limits of an architectural monograph.

Summary:
In the decade following the success of his design for the Hôtel Tassel in Brussels in 1893, Victor Horta, the creator of Art Nouveau architecture, produced more than forty buildings—and a movement. Prepared in close collaboration with the Horta Museum, Brussels, Victor Horta: The Architect of Art Nouveau discusses the many influences on Horta’s designs and his legacy. The richly ornamental style of Art Nouveau, characterized by fluid lines based on natural forms, expressed a desire to abandon the historical styles of the nineteenth century and to develop a language that was beautifully crafted and thoroughly contemporary, laying the foundations for the development of modernism in architecture and interior design.

Summary:
The German architect Rudolf Schwarz (1897–1961) numbers among the leading masters of church architecture in the twentieth century. Inspired by the Catholic Youth Movement, Schwarz designed more than forty religious buildings after 1924 and played an integral role in Cologne’s reconstruction in the aftermath of World War II. In addition, he made a name for himself as the author of fundamental texts on sacred architecture. Praised by Mies van der Rohe as “designed order full of meaning,” Schwarz’s architecture was intended to house religious contemplation. He became famous for his vast, light-filled spaces, minimalist in form yet overflowing with symbolism. This volume documents Schwarz’s transformative sacred buildings in Germany and Austria alongside his collaborations with visual artists such as Ewald Mataré and Georg Meistermann.
