Summary:
As Ellis Woodman points out in his Introduction to this extensively illustrated discussion of the housing projects of Álvaro Siza and James Gowan, this publication frames an encounter between the work of two men who might be considered an unlikely pairing. However, both men were engaged in critical response to the tenets of the Athens Charter that they sought to resolve in their low-cost housing experiments of the 1960s and 70s. The implications of the different social, political and economic contexts in which they enacted this difficult task makes the juxtaposition of their work a fascinating and fruitful process of discovery.

Summary:
Álvaro’s Siza’s public housing projects, designed at great scale and complexity against the backdrop of the Portuguese Revolution, obliged him to articulate a position that was nuanced and ideologically forceful. Such projects developed over long periods, in response to shifts in policy, funding and political climate. For an architect whose work develops always through the iterative sketch, this challenging process, combined with the scale and cultural ambition of the projects themselves, produced the densest imaginable mass of drawings.

"The Continuous Monument", developed by the Italian collective Superstudio during summer 1969, is one of the most known visionary projects within the history of architecture. In sketchbooks Number 11 and 12, dated over a few months between May and November 1969, much of the story of the Continuous Monument emerges – as it were, fully-fledged – from its first conception as a belt around Florence, and its later ambitious circumnavigation of the globe, to its diffident public manifestation – at the scale of a gallery – for the first of the two exhibitions in Graz in 1969. The drawings became the basis of the now better-known Superstudio collages.

Summary:
Yoshio Futagawas photographic homage to two single-family residences in São Paulo designed by architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha allows an intimate look at domestic life shaped by the contrast between exposed concrete surfaces and lush natural surroundings. Designed and built in the early 1970s, both houses are archetypal examples of the so-called Brazilian Brutalism style for which the architect is famous. At the time, they became a laboratory for the architects political beliefs as he developed a language and spatiality of his own. Besides their remarkable aesthetic expression, the houses feature unique solutions related to the organisation of the programme.

Summary:
Located in the Pacific Palisades, the Kappe Residence was designed and built in 1965–67 by American architect and educator Ray Kappe. As Takashi Yanai writes in his essay, Kappe is ''a quiet giant within the local architectural community''. The house he designed for himself and his family follows a long tradition of forward-thinking residences that celebrate the temperate climate and inventive spirit of Los Angeles. Yoshio Futagawa's photographs reflect its perfect example of how a house can be so grounded in place, yet poetic in its spaces and materiality. The challenging site, with its underground springs and steep slope, speaks to Kappe's genius. With an interview by Thom Mayne.
