Summary:
With a portfolio of hundreds of housing projects, Vandkunsten Architects is renowned for designing quality spaces for affordable living. This volume is part of a series about projects by the Danish firm that are representative of its work throughout the years. Ten ongoing or recent projects are selected that feature social, minimal, exclusive, and quite ordinary settings in which people live, ranging from container residences and social housing to luxury living in Oslo Fjord. Modest budgets call for efficient construction techniques, yet the office pursues maximum architectural freedom in its designs, whether using prefab timber-frame box modules, solid wood, or concrete elements.

Summary:
''Lifting the Gaze'' is an examination of how architecture affects the ways we live, learn, and work. It provides reflections on the possibility of bringing forth new communities and new collaborations in spite of differences and in spite of people's individual interests. The themes of the book share an urban affinity in terms of the urban environment's inherent diversity and potential for offering different meeting places. Through three themes, ''Lifting the Gaze'' revisits three projects, rereads theorists, fuses them with present day conditions, and reflects upon what they can teach us about challenges and possibilities of the future.

Summary:
One of the first built projects of Eduardo Souto Moura, Casa das Artes was designed in the early 1980s and completed construction in 1991. The building is located in the gardens of a neoclassical mansion in Porto, dating from the beginning of the 20th century. The competition programme proposed a cinema, auditorium, an exhibition gallery, and required that the surroundings be preserved as they were. According to the architect, ''Work was not allowed to interfere with the garden. Omitting was more important than proposing, deleting was more important than designing, and simplicity more important than composition'' This monograph reflects his very minimalistic approach.

Summary:
