Summary:
The Finnish architect Pekka Helin created his first firm in 1979. In his design approach, he draws in a specifically Scandinavian manner both on functionalism as well as on the organic architecture of Aalvar Alto, Viljo Revell, and Heikki Sirèn, but also Arne Erve. The building material wood plays a prominent role in this extremely clear architecture. The firm creates residential buildings -- often right next to water, where the structure's embeddedness in nature plays an important role in its sight lines -- but also office buildings, for example Nokia's corporate headquarters and the Finnish Modular Office, the tallest wooden office building in Europe. The firm's work also encompasses public buildings such as the Finnish embassy in Moscow and the concert hall and library in Espoo, and even town-planning projects, such as the master plan for the redesigning of the grounds of the former Oslo airport. This book presents twenty-four of the firm's projects organized by typological task, with the focus on life in nature, urban public buildings, residential structures, and various types of workspace.

Summary:
Architecture that is meant to have a sensuous connection to life calls for thinking that goes far beyond form and construction. In his texts, Peter Zumthor articulates what motivates him to design his buildings, which appeal to the visitor's heart and mind in so many different ways and possess a compelling and unmistakable presence and aura. Now in its third edition, this book has been expanded to include two new essays: "Architecture and Landscape" deals with the relationship between the structure and its surroundings, with the secret of the successful placement and topographical integration of architecture. In "The Leis Houses" Peter Zumthor describes the genesis of two wooden houses in the town of Leis in the Swiss canton of Graubunden, thus thematizing the special challenge of integrating contemporary architecture into a traditional architectural context.

Like few others, Louis Kahn cultivated the craft of drawing as a means to architecture. Over two hundred – mostly unpublished – drawings by Kahn and his associates are woven together with a lively and informed commentary into an intimate biography of an architectural idea. Unfolding around the iconic project for the Dominican Motherhouse, the drawings form a narrative which not only reveals the richness and hidden dimensions of this unbuilt masterpiece, but provides compelling insights into Louis Kahn’s mature culture of designing. Fascinating not only in their beauty, the drawings open a new and stimulating perspective on one of the past century’s great architects.

This unconventional building reflects the author's no less unusual personality. The centre in the barren landscape of Hamaroy, where Hamsun lived and worked, the silence and solitude, challenge visitors to involve themselves with him and his work. The book records the connection between Hamsun, the architecture and the landscape. Photographer Iwan Baan relates the landscape and the building to each other, and historical documents illustrate Hamsun's contradictory life and influential work, et al. the novel Hunger (1890), with which Hamsun achieved his fame.

Antonio Foscari retraces Andrea Palladio's life and offers new perspectives on the architects built and unbuilt work. Summary:
The Zürich architects Fuhrimann Hächler take on the most diverse building commissions. The present volume is devoted in particular to private residences, most of them realized for clients who are at home in the architectural and art scenes. These homes captivate by virtue of the clarity and simplicity of their constructive materials, their economically effective construction, and their haptic, sensual surfaces and flowing spatial transitions. Examples of their architecture include the Haus Presenhuber in Vnà (2007), the Haus Müller Gritsch in Lenzburg (2007) and their own residence in Zurich (2003). With contributions by Hubertus Adam, Kurt W. Forster, Gianni Jetzer, Marie Theres Stauffer and the architects.

Summary:
The British architect James Frazer Stirling (1924–1992) stimulated impassioned responses among both supporters and detractors, and he continues to be the subject of fierce debate. Fully illustrated with previously unpublished documents and new photography from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, this book allows for a close examination of design drawings, photographs, and models spanning Stirling’s entire career. These materials deepen our understanding of the influences, early formation, approach, and process of an architect whose work resists labeling. Filled with in-depth analytical and critical presentations of exemplary projects and their reception, the volume reveals Stirling to be a remarkably informed and consistent thinker and writer on architecture.
