Summary:
'Siza' is the official catalogue of the Gulbenkian Foundation’s 2024 exhibition celebrating one of architecture’s greatest living figures. Curated by Carlos Quintáns, it presents ninety of Álvaro Siza’s projects - organised around thirty verbs that define his approach - alongside original archival material, sketches, and photographs by Juan Rodríguez. Essays by nine leading architects and eight rare texts by Siza himself offer fresh insights into his work, while exhibition views capture the spirit of the show. Richly illustrated and thoughtfully edited, this book is both a tribute and an essential study of Siza’s enduring influence.

Summary:
Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza says, "It is hard not to build what created the enthusiasm and pleasure of being an architect. But this is not wasted time." In the unbuilt works collected in this publication, thought, conception, and the timeless heritage of architecture, as well as ideas that through their power and poetic manifestation become models, are examined. The texts that comprise the first volume, written by people intimately familiar with Siza and his work, add memories, analyses, and lived experiences. A selection of texts from the architect himself frame not only the unbuilt projects he has selected but also his vision and approach as an architect, designer, and even sculptor.

Summary:
Through a lively poststructuralist and postcolonial framework, this book explores issues of preservation, identity, meaning, and change, comparing how the Chandigarh we see today compares to the original plans and drawings. But this book also asks whether Chandigarh’s aesthetics, as well as the ethical tenets on which it was based, are still relevant to urban planning and architecture today. What lessons, if any, does the utopian ethos within modernism offer in the face of the climate crisis, rising authoritarianism, and the digital explosion? Via chapters focused on the hydrologics of the master plan, the symbolism of the Capitol buildings, and the archeology of the unbuilt Museum of Knowledge, this book makes the future-preservation case for Chandigarh as an ‘open’ work, a project that was set up by design to be ‘completed’ by others in times yet to come.

Summary:
The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890–1954/1889–1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs. The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt’s realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations.

Summary:
The firm Christoph Hesse Architects addresses the challenges of rural areas by questioning and reinterpreting traditional structures of villages and landscapes in unconventional ways. Raised on a farm in the Hochsauerland region of Germany, Christoph Hesse brings his deep connection to nature and agricultural life to the projects, which are often developed in collaboration with local and international partners. Focusing on five central themes, "Rural rebellion" presents a selection of spatial interventions through striking models, large-scale panoramic drawings, films, portrait photos and statements by the "Rural rebels". The exhibition illustrates how the projects create social, environmental and economical focal points, enabling a future-oriented transformation – one that not only improves life in the countryside, but also redefines it as a source of innovation and societal progress.
