Summary:
Shortly after finishing their studies, Samuel Bünzli and Simon Courvoisier used their talents to master architectural challenges, achieving independent solutions. The restructuring of a residential building, a school, a laboratory building, a project for hotel rooms and a large housing development were architectural milestones. The projects illustrate the precise approach the architects take to their work. The source of their inspiration is the keen analysis of existing constructions, their environment and the programme generated by the construction task. They use these sources to elicit solutions and – almost as a matter of course – always succeed in shaping a piece of city.

Summary:
Arthur Brown Jr. (1874-1957) is celebrated by his peers for such masterpieces as the City Hall, War Memorial Opera House, Temple Emanu-El, and Coit Tower in San Francisco; the Pasadena City Hall; and the Labor-ICC block of the Federal Triangle in Washington, DC. Brown epitomized the idea that architecture not only houses society’s daily rituals and defining events but also can itself shape the sociopolitical landscape of America. "Arthur Brown Jr.: progressive classicist" unifies the varied strands of the architect’s life, from the architectural forms and methods of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to the reforming spirit and self-reliant confidence of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906 to the challenging economics and changing aesthetics of machine-age America. It details the development of Brown’s major works and many other civic, commercial, religious, academic, and residential buildings. It chronicles his unflagging commitment to the classical tradition, which he employed in contemporary, forward-looking institutional buildings that emphasized continuity with the past while meeting the needs of the future. To Brown, the classical tradition was not a sacrosanct, unchanging body of knowledge; it was an expanding and evolving set of ideas about architectural design that permitted, and even demanded, change as new conditions and technologies were developed.

Summary:
V. P, J.P. Préface de Jorge Lavelli.

Summary:
That the same adjectives can be used to describe Swiss architecture by those who admire it and those who don't -namely minimal, uncompromising and well constructed- is a strange and noteworthy consensus. Transcending such characteristics is the work of Burkhalter Sumi, for it has as much sensuality as sense, opulence as rigour, and an architectural ambition tempered refreshingly with modesty. Even though Burkhalter Sumi are now working on larger scale problems and projects than before, their way of thinking and working shows a remarkable consistency over the 21 years since the office's founding. Over years of obervations, mulling and simply following their personal tastes the architects had assembled a host of complicated and contradictory issues about timber architecture, such as tectonics, form and its perception, prefabrication, colour, ecology and hybrid structures. This issue of 2G magazine, devoted to Burkhalter Sumi, collects an illustrative selection of recent works by the Swiss team, including residential projects, urban planning, projects for the workplace and exhibitions.

Summary:
Published alongside the futuristic urban exhibition at Urbis, Manchester (January – May 2005) Will Alsop is one of the most celebrated and controversial architects working in the UK today. Here he explores the future of the cities of England’s North – the way they look, function and enhance the lives of those who live there. The book concentrates on the different forms this ‘northern corridor’ (80 miles long and 15 miles wide) might take when considered a single entity. Featuring essays by Will Alsop, Scott Burnham, James Hulme, Laurie Peake, Bridget Sawyers and Bill Tyson, the book weaves a narrative through the rich visual flair of Alsop’s imagination to tell the story of a near future in which we may come to live.

Summary:
The Walker Art Center recently opened its expanded space, which includes a new theatre, a new restaurant, and more galleries, but is best known for being Herzog & de Meuron’s first public building in the United States. The project drew national coverage from media including 'The New York Times'. 'Expanding the Center' caters to and piques public interest in the building with a generous selection of images, including sketches, renderings, and photographs of the construction process and the completed work. Herzog & de Meuron’s shimmering but grounded design mirrors the textures and shades of the Walker’s original space, and an institutional philosophy based in innovation and risk-taking, the exploration of alternative approaches to learning, the experimental use of technologies to communicate information, and the design of spaces to enhance a variety of museum experiences. The book is organized around the decisions and actions of the architects, builders, Walker staff and the audience - i.e. designing, constructing, unveiling, staging, gathering, patterning, framing, collecting - and highlights the thinking that led to the visible form of the Center as well as the innovative projects and initiatives that give it its inimitable character.
