Summary:
How, in a turbulent century, was Le Corbusier able to reinvent himself at least five times? How was he able to become the Picasso (or Duchamp) of architecture? How was he able to produce work in a regional Art Nouveau mode, then become a leader of the Modern Movement and International Style, then switch to primitive materials and Brutalism before pre-empting Post-Modernism through Ronchamp and Chandigarh, and pre-empting High-Tech and Complexity Architecture through the Centre Le Corbusier and the Philips Pavilion? How?’ These transformations were helped along by the way Le Corbusier was able to cross ideas from one medium to another. A work of architecture could be considered as a written text, a drawing, a model, a photograph, a sculpture, a painting or a detailed set of plans. Each medium challenged, clarified and refined the idea from different viewpoints. Each medium made use of different neurons, of different parts of his mind. The result? Continuous creation from different perspectives, a continual reinvention of architecture. This book brings together leading scholars to explore Le Corbusier’s tactics of self-reinvention, his relationship to the artistic avant-garde and his work as a multimedia practitioner. It also contains an English-language edition of Le Corbusier's 'Poème de l’Angle Droit', complete with beautiful colour lithographs. Authors include Tim Benton, Peter Carl, Hilde Heynen, Charles Jencks, Mohsen Mostafavi, Daniel Naegele, Fernando Pérez Oyarzun, and Stanislaus von Moos.

Summary:
Liesbeth van der Pol designs buildings with strong characters; buildings 'that are not ashamed of themselves'. Her buildings are intended to add something of themselves, something unique even, in their relationship with the human environment. This is borne out by the striking 'Red Rascals' on the southern rim of Almere, the storage building of the Netherlands Maritime Museum, and Aquartis at Entrepotdok in Amsterdam. In this monograph twelve of van der Pol's most noteworthy projects are singled out and illustrated with photographs, plans and drawings. It also features a considerable number of watercolours by the architect. Two essays describe and analyse van der Pol's work.

Aujourd’hui on s’y arrache les appartements à prix d’or.

Summary:
Japanese architect Shuhei Endo can be defined as an architect of steel, since he distinctly favors this material in the buildings he designs, continually experimenting with its infinite possibilities. His works are apparently weightless: undulating sheets of steel are twisted into spirals and wrapped around buildings in overlapping layers, like petals of flowers, or arranged on different levels to create a membrane around open spaces. This approach is most evident in the "great roofs" that house Endo-designed offices, such as Rooftecture N (Nisinomiya, Hyogo, 1998), or spaces for relaxation and meetings, such as Rooftecture T (Fukui, 1997), as well as private homes, such as Springtecture H (Harima, 1998) and Rooftecture M (Maruoka, 2001). Born in 1960 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, he graduated in 1986 from the Kyoto School of Art and then joined the Osamu Ishii & Biken Associates architectural studio. In 1988 he founded the Shuhei Endo Institute in Osaka and began teaching at Kinki University, Kobe Design University, and the Fukui Institute of Technology.

Summary:
This complete monograph presents 89 of Richard Meier's buildings, documenting the principal stages of Meier's career in chronological order, from his early private homes and residential buildings - such as the two large complexes of Twin Parks, Bronx, New York, and the Bronx Development Center - to recent major projects in the United States and in several European countries. Among the well-known works in this volume are the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Church of Dives in Misericordia, Rome. In the early 1970s, Meier was one of the "New York Five," an informal group of East Coast architects who shared a preference for new and original contributions to the modern tradition and shaped an alternative to the "gray" architecture that dominated highrise East Coast buildings at the time.

Summary:
The conversion and revitalisation of old industrial premises is a construction task which is increasingly important in the transition from an industrial society to a service society. The architect Michael A. Landes converted the site of the Union brewery in Frankfurt into a new urban district for the investor Ardi Goldman by cautiously supplementing the existing substance with a new building. This ensemble situated in Hanauer Landstrasse, Frankfurt's centre for creative people of all kinds, is convincing in the power of its architectural language and in its urban quality. A fine balance of access space and open spaces makes it into a city which is open for a wide range of uses.
