Summary:
In 2009, the Dolder Grand celebrates its first birthday following a four-year remodelling by Foster+Partners. To mark the occasion, this publication outlines the history of an iconic institution, steeped in tradition, from its beginnings as a Kurhaus in 1899 to its present-day reincarnation. Photographers from the Zurich studio nave have documented the entire project throughout every stage of the refurbishment, charting the scope of the hotel’s metamorphosis. They portray the people who made it all possible and also allow them to speak for themselves. The resulting narrative in pictures and words is not simply a linear documentation, but a rich and complex tapestry in which text and image are interwoven with a lyricism that brings the architecture to life on the pages of the book. Journalist Judith Wyder complements the photographs with anecdotes that give a many-facetted insight into the operational logistics behind the scenes in the day-to-day running of the hotel. In addition, she details the painstaking restoration work, the history of the hotel itself and the names of some of its most famous guests. Dutch novelist Cees Nooteboom has contributed an essay in which he describes the hotel as a microcosm and a home away from home, musing on how guests tend to take possession of the hotels they stay in.

In this volume, the numerous excerpts, preliminary notes, accompanying drawings, and photographs that Le Corbusier produced in connection with his lectures are presented and contextualized by one of the leading experts on the great architect. In them we see modernism at work. Always a great rhetorician and a master at staging his own persona, Le Corbusier takes the arguments and strategies, seminal ideas and most convincing highlights and fuses them into an architectural conception that every advanced architectural position and practice must still come to terms with today.

The members of J. Mayer H. Architects, founded in Berlin in 1996 by Jürgen Mayer, have already won a number of awards for their extraordinary work--for example, their very first building won the Mies van der Rohe Emerging Architect Prize in 2003. Their structures bulge and pop inorganically in a style that aims to go, as Mayer puts it, "beyond the blob." In recent years the firm has created a furor with attention-getting buildings such as the new commons for the Universität Karlsruhe, the ADA 1 offices in Hamburg and the Metropol Parasol, a gigantic structure for the marketplace in the heart of old Seville. Edited by Henry Urbach, this is the first book to present J. Mayer H. Architects' entire oeuvre, tracking the firm's constructions from the research stage through design to project development and culminating in the actual building itself.

In 1955, just as the world was pigeonholing him as the high priest of modernism, Le Corbusier shocked the architecture world with – of all things – weekend houses. Built of brick, concrete, stone, and timber, the Maisons Jaoul are the antithesis of everything commonly referred to as “Corbusian.” Le Corbusier and the Maisons Jaoul, now in english translation, is the first book-length, detailed examination of these lesser-known, yet architecturally significant houses. Using previously unpublished sources, the author thoroughly captures Le Corbusier’s extraordinary journey of discovery.
