Summary:
Manuel Gallego (born 1936), a disciple of the most important Spanish architect of the post-war period, Alejandro de la Sota, is perhaps the best exponent of radical architecture in Spain today. His rational buildings - a series of broken primary forms grounded in the particulars of the place, where the spaces created open up to the outside and the walls act as the connecting elements between architecture and nature - stand out for their striking sculptural expression. The radical nature of his architecture is solidly rooted in the vernacular, giving rise to innovative designs in which the use of local materials (stone, wood, glass, metal) and the handling of light create an intimate dialogue between the man-made and the surrounding environment. This monograph on the Spanish architect Manuel Gallego, who received the Spanish Architecture Award is 1997, is the first on one of the most important representatives of modern Spanish architecture.

Summary:
Rem Koolhaas' spaces for living, including his apartments and houses, are collected for the first time in book format. This new book highlights this important aspect of his work: with texts, plans and photographs, it presents the Patiovilla in Rotterdam, the Villa Dall'Ava in Paris, the Dutch House in Holten, the Maison à Bordeaux, and the Nexus Housing in Fukuoka/Japan. Their common theme is an intense search for freedom. As with all of Koolhaas' work, a clever play with openings, transparencies and transparent and opaque surfaces makes these living spaces permeable to the variations of light, weather, and function.

Summary:
Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) is regarded internationally as one of the most important Dutch architects. As director of Public Works and City Architect to Hilversum, Dudok realized in that municipality not only his world-famous City Hall but also a welter of smaller projects including public baths, a library, housing, schools, a sports park and a cemetery. It was in this period that Dudok developed his own idiom, marked by compositions of cubic volumes. Besides his Hilversum buildings, others he built in Rotterdam, Paris and Velsen have been the subject of great interest. They are regarded as exemplifying an architecture that appeals not only to the professional world but also to the public at large. This compact though well illustrated volume gives a complete overview of the major works by this architect who succeeded in striking a unique balance between modernism and tradition.
