Comme beaucoup de sa génération, il hésite entre le langage commun et normatif du courant international et les approches diversifiées qu’inspire le contexte local. Prenant ses distances avec les théories et les modèles dominants hérités du mouvement moderne, et renonçant à reproduire invariablement un standard architectural, il préfère ouvrir ses réalisations à des éléments de cultures régionales et nationales et rattacher chacun de ses projets à l’histoire et à la géographie de leur propre site. Fidèle à ce courant historiciste, il se fait théoricien de l’urbanisme, notamment à travers son magistral Territoire de l’architecture (L’Equerre, 1982).

Les édifices, les objets, les musées, les intérieurs ou les décors qui portent sa signature témoignent tous d’une conception du métier d’architecte ouverte aux expérimentations les plus novatrices.
