Frei Otto, recipient of the prestigious Royal Gold Medal 2005 awarded by the RIBA, is internationally renowned for his innovative tensile and tent-like structures. With his application of modern technology and research into natural forms Frei Otto became a pioneer in the field of lightweight construction and ecological building. This is the first comprehensive survey of his complete works, including such aesthetical masterpieces as the West German Pavilion at the Montreal Exposition in 1967 and the roof of the 1972 Munich Olympic Arena. 12 essays by prominent authors and an extensive catalogue of over 200 buildings and projects from 1951-2004, supplemented by drawings, models and historical documents combine to make this publication the definitive reference work on one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.

Summary:
Le Corbusier's first trip to the United States in 1935 is generally considered a failure because it produced no commissions. The experience nevertheless had a profound effect on him, both personally and professionally. Sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Le Corbusier promoted his ideas through a lecture tour, exhibition, and press conferences, as well as in meetings with industrialists, housing reformers, New Deal technocrats, and editors. His lectures were watershed events that advanced the cause of European modernism. Yet he returned to France empty-handed and published a bittersweet account, "Quand les cathédrales étaient blanches: voyage au pays des timides" ("When the Cathedrals Were White: Journey to the Country of Timid People"), which faulted America for lacking the courage to adopt his ideas. In this first major study of Le Corbusier's American tour, Mardges Bacon reconstructs his encounter with America in all its fascinating detail. Through extensive archival research and interviews, she presents a critical history of the tour as well as a nuanced and intimate portrait of the architect. Drawing on the methods of microhistory, she also considers how small ordinary events affect larger biographical, architectural, and cultural developments. Bacon notes that Le Corbusier's dialogue with America was drafted within a spirited European discourse on américanisme. She contends that the trip validated his concept of a "second machine age" that would unite standardized industrial methods with a new humanism. Le Corbusier's subsequent work, she suggests, reflected an "Americanization," evidenced by the introduction of tension structures and the textured skyscraper conceived as an integrated system with functions articulated. She also defines Le Corbusier's role in the debate over New York City high-rise public housing. Appearing here in print for the first time are color reproductions of the pastel drawings that illustrated Le Corbusier's American lectures.

Summary:
At the dawn of his international fame, architect Richard Neutra was approached by a St. Louis socialite, Grace Lewis Miller, to design a small winter home on the edge of glamour-baked Palm Springs. Miller wanted an open, light-filled house that could also act as a studio for her fashionably avant-garde exercise course in posture and grace, "The Mensendieck System." This unique program, combined with the desert landscape and the proactive, health-minded client appealed to the idealist in Neutra. The frequent, fervent dialog between Neutra and Miller, who had great mutual respect, produced a work of forward-thinking and artful architecture. In "Richard Neutra's Miller House", Stephen Leet traces the conception and realization of the house, examines the complex relationship between architect and client, and shows how the Mensendieck System influenced the creation of this seminal Neutra project. Beautiful duotone photographs by Julius Shulman, excerpts from the detailed correspondence between Neutra and Miller, and sketches and drawings provide valuable insight into the design process.

Summary:
Presentations and analyses of Kahn's essential realized buildings are the focal point of this book, from the early work, which has gained recognition only in recent years, to the large-scale projects for the capital buildings of Bangladesh in Dhaka and the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. The book's starting point is the reconstruction of the design process of the buildings according to their plans and elevations. Kahn's distinctive modernism, exemplified in projects such as the Richards Laboratories in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is traced to its most simple and basic geometric shapes and is developed in fascinating complexity. The drawings, made exclusively for this publication, are combined with previously unpublished photographs.
