The vast structure, covering ca 618 by 246 yards of ground, makes for a spectacular spatial experience in its main exhibition hall that offers 484,376 square feet of column-free floor space. OMA also took an unusual path with regard to the configuration and transport connection of the entire complex. Rather than sealing even more ground with tarmac for endless car parks, it concentrated them into a compact multi-storey parking garage at the heart of the complex that also serves as a general traffic hub for MEETT Toulouse.

Summary:
The architectural principle of the cellular compartment floor plan is as simple as it is economical, yet it allows for spatial and combinable freedom that can be interpreted in ever-new and ever-different ways. The resulting self-contained units or spatial sequences are suited for residential purposes as much as for office buildings, museums, or schools, with the floor plans providing highly dynamic and surprising traffic patterns and views. The cellular compartment floor plan is the generating principle in many buildings, projects, and competition entries by the renowned Basel-based Luca Selva Architects, who have been continually developing this typology in their practice, modifying it and adapting it for new applications in different projects. The cellular compartment floor plan is therefore the ideal focus of this new book on the work of the prolific firm. Numerous plans and photographs are supplemented with a theoretical essay by Christoph Wieser and a conversation between Luca Selva and Patrick Gmür. Shedding light for the first time on this surprisingly sparsely researched topic, this comprehensive book will have significance for the discourse reaching well beyond the exemplary designs by Luca Selva Architects.

Architect Tom Kundig is known worldwide for the originality of his work. This paperback edition of "Tom Kundig: houses," first published in 2006, collects five of his most prominent early residential projects, which remain touchstones for him today. In a new preface written for this edition, Kundig reflects on the influence that these designs continue to have on his current thinking. Each house, presented from conceptual sketches through meticulously realized details, is the product of a sustained and active collaborative process among designer, builder, and client. The work of the Seattle-based architect has been called both raw and refined—disparate characteristics that produce extraordinarily inventive designs inspired by both the industrial structures ubiquitous to his upbringing in the Pacific Northwest and the vibrant craft cultures that are fostered there.

Making Houston modern: the life and architecture of Howard

Summary:
Complex, controversial, and prolific, Howard Barnstone was a central figure in the world of twentieth-century modern architecture. Recognized as Houston’s foremost modern architect in the 1950s, Barnstone came to prominence for his designs with partner Preston M. Bolton, which transposed the rigorous and austere architectural practices of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to the hot, steamy coastal plain of Texas. Barnstone was a man of contradictions - charming and witty but also self-centered, caustic, and abusive - who shaped new settings that were imbued, at once, with spatial calm and emotional intensity. ''Making Houston Modern'' explores the provocative architect’s life and work, not only through the lens of his architectural practice but also by delving into his personal life, class identity, and connections to the artists, critics, collectors, and museum directors who forged Houston’s distinctive culture in the postwar era. Edited by three renowned voices in the architecture world, this volume situates Barnstone within the contexts of American architecture, modernism, and Jewish culture to unravel the legacy of a charismatic personality whose imaginative work as an architect, author, teacher, and civic commentator helped redefine architecture in Texas.

This is the first book of a monographic collection on the projects of h2o architectes. It showcases the construction of a residential building in Paris that features ashlar masonry facades. Requiring neither firing nor the addition of other products, stone material allows a 60% reduction in carbon emissions during the construction phase, in comparison to concrete, and a 35% reduction over a period of 50 years. The architects successfully demonstrate how load-bearing stone represents an economical alternative and lends a higher-quality standard of finish.

Summary:
"At one with nature" showcases Ken Yeang’s latest ideas, built projects designs, research work and advances in the field of designing with nature, a topic that Yeang has pioneered and developed over many decades since receiving his doctorate in ecological design and planning from Cambridge University. His ideas and work are even more pertinent today with the current state of devastation of Earth’s natural systems and a biogeochemical cycle that has been extensively and severely impacted by human society. The global environment today is in a state of crisis, but what can society do to address the issues? Yeang’s recent projects are presented with instructive diagrams that provide a basis for action for architects, planners, designers, engineers, and anyone whose daily work impinges on the natural environment. Offered in a highly visual, annotated format, with instructive illustrations of Yeang’s theoretical books on the topic, "At one with nature" is an invaluable resource that students and academics interested in designing with nature will find both informative and relevant.
