Summary:
Rafael Viñoly is arguably our most consummate practitioner of architecture; Herbert Muschamp of the New York Times calls him "the most elegant architect now practicing in the United States," one whose powerful buildings "quicken your awareness of the present and its untapped possibilities." In a breathtaking list of major commissions, Viñoly has taken projects of an often conventional nature-conference centers, recital halls, exhibition halls, sports facilities-and transformed them into unconvential works of beauty, notable for their lucidity, and often breathtaking technical prowess. This encyclopedic monograph, designed by Lars Müller in the same spirit as his "Peter Zumthor: Works", is the first on Viñoly, and includes projects in the United States, Argentina, Egypt, Korea, and Japan. Featured are the recently opened Kimmel Performing Arts Center-the new home of the Philaldelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Convention Center, the Climate Prediction Center on the Palisades, the Princeton University Stadium, and the dazzling Tokyo Forum-the gracefully expressive building Muschamp describes as "an absolutist building, perfectly realized." An essay by Joan Ockman, Director of the Buell Center of American Architecture at Columbia University, introduces Viñoly's work, which is copiously documented in more than 500 color images and drawings.

Summary:
The light- and breeze-filled modern houses in Florida of the 1950s -- featured in Paul Rudolph: The Florida Houses -- and the hard-lined silhouette of Yale's Art and Architecture Building (1962) are the two images that come to mind when one thinks of Paul Rudolph. Yet few people know the work of the last decades of his life, from the 1970s through the 90s. Published here for the first time, Rudolph's final works are explored through his masterful pencil drawings, models, and photographs, as well as the last interview of his life with architect Peter Blake. In a book that considers these projects in the context of his early success, Roberto de Alba explores the architect's buildings designed from 1969 to 1996 and includes an astonishing variety of projects, many built, such as houses, towers, bungalows, chapels, corporate buildings, and urban plans of a monumental scale. All show the complicated interplay of space, light, and mass that are the trademarks of Rudolph's genius. Through de Alba's close contact with the architect before his death, Rudolph's own vision is conveyed in descriptive texts and accompanying images. Paul Rudolph: The Late Work is designed as a companion volume to The Florida Houses, and is the second in a planned three-volume set of the complete works of this legendary architect.

Summary:
Educated in Vienna just after the turn of the century, Frank became the leader of the younger generation of architects in Austria after the First World War. But Frank fell from grace when he emerged as a forceful critic of the extremes of modern architecture and design during the early 1930s. Dismissing the demands for a unified modern style, Frank insisted that it was pluralism, not uniformity, that most characterized life in the new machine age. He called instead for a more humane modernism, one that responded to people's everyday needs and left room for sentimentality and historical influences. He was able to put these ideas into practice when, in 1933, he was forced to leave Vienna for Sweden. There his work came to define Swedish (or Scandinavian) modern design. For more than thirty years he was the chief designer for the Stockholm furnishings firm Svenskt Tenn, producing colorful, cozy, and eclectic designs that provided a refreshing alternative to the architectural mainstream of the day and presaged the coming revolt against modernism in the 1960s.

Summary:
The largely unknown oeuvre of the Philippine architect Leandro V. Locsin (1928-1994) embodies the search for identity in the built environment. Having completed his studies, Locsin opened his practice in 1953 in the capital Manila which, after the aerial attacks by the Allied forces for the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation, had been almost completely destroyed. The reconstruction, as well as technical innovations and favorable political and economic conditions, made it possible for him to design a wide range and large number of projects, including hotels, commercial buildings, churches, cultural venues, and public buildings. His work combines inspiration from modernism with local traditions and comprises a total of 245 projects, of which more than half were completed. The book presents a selection of the most important buildings and projects.

Summary:
Almost all of the seventeen texts in this anthology revolve around the same topic: drawing. There are subtle variations in the inception and focus of each essay, but they can be read as a unique, continuous monologue that keeps going back to that same core idea, almost compulsively. Flores & Prats believe in the capacity of drawing by hand to generate multiple and complex strata of knowledge about a space or a place, so they use it to guide the successive steps in their design process. Their obsession with drawing is a form of optimistic resistance, founded on the belief that the tools of architectural representation, if used with intensity, rigour and passion, can still help us decipher the world that surrounds us.

Summary:
The Aedes exhibition and catalogue ''Two Towers,'' dedicated to Álvaro Siza, commemorates his 90th anniversary as one of the most important living architects and a major contributor to contemporary architecture. Siza is famous for his handmade sketches, in which he captures complex situations in order to ease their understanding and resolution. They establish a dialectic rapport between his creative intuition and the material detailing of quality construction. Both the catalog and exhibition illuminate Siza's passion for towers and his fascination with reaching for the sun, while simultaneously focusing on two case studies and their diverging traits: one is taller and the other is shorter, one is private, and the other is public, one is for dwelling, and the other is for protection, one is urban, and the other is rural, one is in reinforced concrete and the other in lightweight steel frame.
