In 1956, Time magazine called him one of the “form-givers of the 20th century“: with his invention of steel-tube furniture, Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) has made his mark in the history of design at the tender age of 23. He started his architectural career as one of the Bauhaus’s most influential architects with the 1932 Harnischmacher House. Even Breuer’s earliest work was marked by the search for a symbiosis between local and global, big and small, smooth and rough. His sparse use of materials emphasized the balance among textures, colors, and shapes. In 1943, he conceived the “binuclear” house concept—the splitting of living and sleeping areas into separate wings—which he first applied to the Geller House I (1944-1946), and which would attain great popularity. After designing the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (1953-1958), reinforced concrete, with its formal plasticity und structural elasticity, continued to give monumental character to buildings such as the Abbey and Campus of St. John’s University in Minnesota (1953-1961), the IBM Research Center in France (1960-1962), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1963-1966) in New York City. With his keen sense of proportion, shape, and material, Breuer is one of the most important Modernists and is still very much central in the discussion of contemporary architecture.

Summary:
Rarely has a Dutch architect so characterized an era as Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921), not only for such landmark buildings as the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam, but also for his numerous neo-Gothic Catholic churches, which are now intimately associated with the popular conception of Dutch cities and villages. Cuypers' controversial views on restoration, his plea for a revaluation of Gothic architecture and his influence on H.P. Berlage and Michiel de Klerk make him the most important Dutch architect of his time. Not only did he leave a quantitative mark on the built environment of the Netherlands, he elevated the quality of Dutch architecture generally, and established a precedent for the modern architecture firm. This beautifully designed publication unlocks Cuypers' complete oeuvre for the first time. A selection of essays sheds light on the scope and significance of his work, and hundreds of photos, designs and maps make this book definitive and complete. The son of a church painter, Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) was born in Roermond, the Netherlands. In 1852, he opened a workshop for the manufacture of ecclesiastical art, but quickly moved into architectural work. As well as creating some of Amsterdam's most beloved buildings, he built over 100 churches and restored countless others.

Summary:
Yona Friedman presents a personal selection of half a century of his work. In 1958 Yona Friedman published his first manifesto on "mobile architecture" and founded GEAM (Groupe d'Etude d'Architecture Mobile), which proposed different strategies and actions geared to the adaptation of architectural creation to modern user requirements concerning social and physical mobility. In this initial manifesto, Friedman points out that architectural knowledge cannot be the exclusive property of professionals and specialists, and suggests writing guides ("manuals"), which explain topics related to architecture and urban planning in clear and simple terms. Following some recent publications that have reasserted the importance of Friedman's work, Pro Domo is "a collection of fragments of scattered topics," a set of "milestones" selected by the author himself. In his words, these highlights are not meant as a testament nor do they, form a coherent whole." Instead, they form a personal selection chosen according to their sentimental value and span fifty-year period of production dating from the foundation of GEAM. The book includes building structure studies, urban design theories, observations on regional development, as well as design manuals for self-construction and competition projects.

Summary:
In the past, buildings and other constructions representing singular moments for the community were called monuments. Their origin was expression of power, celebration of ritual or collective affirmation. In the contemporary world, a project that aspires to be exceptionally expressive is commonly called an icon. This book claims that star-architects and their “iconic” architecture are no longer valid today, as these projects are all driven by marketing machineries. Architecture should re-emerge as a credible artefact and fulfill the transcendent demands of our time. The publication begins with a series of general texts on themes that vary but all share a common critical look at the role of the iconic on the recent architecture scene.

Summary:
The Glass House, designed by celebrated architect Philip Johnson as a personal retreat, is an icon of modern architecture. A crystalline box set in a serene New England landscape, the house is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which will open it to visitors in April 2007. Johnson used his property near New Canaan, Connecticut, as an architectural laboratory, adding nine additional structures over a forty-year period. Among them are the Ghost House, a chain-link tribute to Frank Gehry, and the witty, bright red Gate House. Glass House is a unique presentation of the Glass House complex in words and photographs. Compiled by eminent critic Toshio Nakamura under the sponsorship of YKK AP Inc., the volume features a specially commissioned suite of photographs, taken throughout the four seasons, by renowned architectural photographer Michael Moran, including cross-processed images and images taken with infrared film. The deluxe graphic presentation, with distinctive paper stocks and foldout pages reproducing Johnson's original drawings, was conceived by designer Michael Rock of 2x4.

Summary:
With its head office in Munich, the architecture studio HildundK, consisting of Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl, bases its design activities as a whole on a single premise: to produce modern architecture without the latter entering into conflict with the urban setting, historical tradition, local craftsmanship and, of course, the needs of users. Its projects are articulated around three fundamental types of intervention. The first consists of taking some datum or other of the surroundings, in particular the city of Munich, its history and building tradition, as a point of departure. The resonance of the context enables their constructed buildings to have an evocative power that goes beyond the formal. In fact, theirs is a way of doing things that is deliberately at odds with the notion of form as a starting point. Secondly, they tackle the issue of ornamentation as a basic part of their project designs by linking it to the artisanal decorative traditions of the region. Lastly, and without losing a proximity to the simplicity of traditional buildings and their decoration, they incorporate a tremendous sensitivity towards materials and contemporary technical conditions. In the last analysis, HildundK hope their architecture is understood by its users, that its cultural contents communicate and connect the public with the discipline of architecture by providing a response to their requirements. To quote Mechthild Stuhlmacher, author of one of the introductory texts: Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl regard it as imperative to escape from an architectural discourse that is purely internal. In their view architecture must also be comprehensible to the layman if it is to survive as a discipline.
