Summary:
This volume presents, in a sequence of ten conversations, Bernard Tschumi's autobiography in architecture, from his conceptual proposals of the early 1970s through his major current buildings and projects. Tschumi approaches his work as the gradual construction of an argument. The conversations, drawn from a six-year series of interviews with critic Enrique Walker, represent that argument in an analysis of Tschumi’s writings, buildings, and other works. The conversations offer a clear-eyed analysis of Tschumi’s work, suggesting the interwoven relationship between the strategies of each individual design and the formation of the architect’s overarching theoretical project. Among the major works of architecture investigated are Parc de la Villette in Paris; Le Fresnoy National Studio for Contemporary Arts in Tourcoing, France; and the New Acropolis Museum in Athens. Also included are Tschumi's conceptual works and writings such as "The Manhattan Transcripts" and "Architecture and Disjunction".

Summary:
During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Warren & Wetmore was one of the most successful and prolific architectural practices in America. Producing over three hundred major projects, including the celebrated Grand Central Terminal (designed in association with Reed & Stem), Beaux Arts-trained Whitney Warren (1864-1943) and lawyer Charles D. Wetmore (1866-1941) grasped the stylistic requirements and prevailing architectural tastes of the vibrant period leading up to the Great Depression. The firm’s bold and creative interpretation of classical and French styles, as translated into American practice, reflected the cultural, social, and business aspirations of the country’s ruling class. Illustrated with Jonathan Wallen’s new color photographs and with historic photographs, drawings, and plans, "The architecture of Warren & Wetmore" is the first book to examine the scope of the firm’s rich and varied body of work. In addition to Grand Central Terminal, Warren & Wetmore was responsible for some of New York’s most memorable buildings, including the New York Yacht Club, grand mansions for such prominent clients as the Vanderbilts, and a number of luxurious early apartment buildings and hotels. During a period of rampant building activity, the firm was instrumental in shaping New York’s expanding cityscape with its office buildings in Terminal City and setback towers. Its hotels and resorts nationwide set an unprecedented level of comfort and luxury for America’s leisure class, guiding the direction of the modern-day hotel. The reconstruction of the university library in Louvain, Belgium-Warren’s most prized commission-held the international spotlight after World War I. The book includes a catalogue raisonné and an employee roster, and is the definitive source about a practice that made an indelible imprint on the American landscape. Foreword by Robert A.M. Stern

Summary:
This book brings together 17 Kahn projects, ranging from private housing to commercial architecture, religious buildings, exhibition spaces, and government buildings. With the Jonas Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959–1965) Kahn created a workspace with superb functional and aesthetic qualities; the institute’s Minimalist elements radiate a sense of eternal beauty. The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth (1966–1972) occupies the somewhat faceless city like an island of spiritual space, an effect that is achieved by simplicity in design and materials. Also, the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (1962–1974) and the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, National Assembly of Bangladesh in Dhaka that was finished after his death are buildings of monumental importance, demonstrating the vision the architect.

Summary:
Le Corbusier designed two collections of colors for the Salubra wallpaper company, the “Clavier de couleurs” of 1931, with 43 colors, and the 1959 collection, with 20. Not content with the choice of 43 colors drawn from his experience as an architect and painter, he organized the tones on 12 sample cards in such a manner that one could use a slider to isolate or combine different sets of three to five colors. Each of these cards contained a different chromatic atmosphere, intended, when used, to produce a particular spatial effect. Thus Le Corbusier not only created a useful tool but also a kind of testament of the purist theory of color. In 1959 he created a second collection reflecting the changes in his views, with 20 single colors assembled on a single “clavier.” In the first volume, Arthur Rüegg, a professor at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule and a specialist in Le Corbusier, explores the significance of the Salubra collections for the history of modern architecture.

This volume complements the travelling exhibition on Kuma's projects which opens in Syracuse (Sicily) in May 2005. Kuma's creative process and his painstaking work on the material in order to transform it into a building is documented through the presentation of the most important of his architectural works designed between 1994 and 2004. Luigi Alini's essay describes the artist's formative years, analyzing the various aspects of his research through themes and compositional mechanisms that have remained constant, his study and profound knowledge of materials, and the symbiosis between architecture and nature. A selection of Kuma's writings completes the volume.
