Summary:
Like few others, Louis Kahn cultivated the craft of drawing as a means to architecture. Over two hundred – mostly unpublished – drawings by Kahn and his associates are woven together with a lively and informed commentary into an intimate biography of an architectural idea. Unfolding around the iconic project for the Dominican Motherhouse, the drawings form a narrative which not only reveals the richness and hidden dimensions of this unbuilt masterpiece, but provides compelling insights into Louis Kahn’s mature culture of designing. Fascinating not only in their beauty, the drawings open a new and stimulating perspective on one of the past century’s great architects.

This unconventional building reflects the author's no less unusual personality. The centre in the barren landscape of Hamaroy, where Hamsun lived and worked, the silence and solitude, challenge visitors to involve themselves with him and his work. The book records the connection between Hamsun, the architecture and the landscape. Photographer Iwan Baan relates the landscape and the building to each other, and historical documents illustrate Hamsun's contradictory life and influential work, et al. the novel Hunger (1890), with which Hamsun achieved his fame.

Antonio Foscari retraces Andrea Palladio's life and offers new perspectives on the architects built and unbuilt work. The author reveals an image of Venice that differs from the one we all know: a city that projects herself into the modern age by abandoning the accepted principles of late medieval culture that had so profoundly influenced its formation.

Summary:
The Zürich architects Fuhrimann Hächler take on the most diverse building commissions. The present volume is devoted in particular to private residences, most of them realized for clients who are at home in the architectural and art scenes. These homes captivate by virtue of the clarity and simplicity of their constructive materials, their economically effective construction, and their haptic, sensual surfaces and flowing spatial transitions. Examples of their architecture include the Haus Presenhuber in Vnà (2007), the Haus Müller Gritsch in Lenzburg (2007) and their own residence in Zurich (2003). With contributions by Hubertus Adam, Kurt W. Forster, Gianni Jetzer, Marie Theres Stauffer and the architects.

Summary:
The British architect James Frazer Stirling (1924–1992) stimulated impassioned responses among both supporters and detractors, and he continues to be the subject of fierce debate. Fully illustrated with previously unpublished documents and new photography from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, this book allows for a close examination of design drawings, photographs, and models spanning Stirling’s entire career. These materials deepen our understanding of the influences, early formation, approach, and process of an architect whose work resists labeling. Filled with in-depth analytical and critical presentations of exemplary projects and their reception, the volume reveals Stirling to be a remarkably informed and consistent thinker and writer on architecture.

Summary:
Event-Cities 4 is the latest in the Event-Cities series from Bernard Tschumi, documenting recent built and theoretical projects in the context of his evolving views on architecture, urbanism, and design. Event-Cities 4 follows directly from the work of Event-Cities 3, which examined the interaction of architectural content, concept, and context. This volume takes the interaction a step further, looking at a series of projects for which program or context are insufficient as a generative conceptual strategy, hence requiring a different approach. Tschumi has said, "Over the past years, there is one word I have almost never used, except in order to attack it: 'form.'" In Event-Cities 4, Tschumi introduces the "concept-form": a concept generating a form, or a form generating a concept, so that one reinforces the other. The concept may be programmatic, technological, or social. The form may be singular or multiple, regular or irregular. Concept-forms act as organizing devices or common denominators for the multiple dimensions of programs and their evolution over time, and drive the projects featured in this book. Highlights include master plans for a pair of media-based work spaces and cultural campuses in Singapore and Abu Dhabi; a major master plan for a financial center with 40,000 projected inhabitants in the Dominican Republic; the innovative Blue Residential Tower in New York City; a group of museums and cultural buildings in France, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and South Korea; a pedestrian bridge in France; and a "multi-programmatic" furniture piece, the TypoLounger. The book contains more than twenty of the Tschumi firm's recent projects.

Summary:
The potential of electric light as a new building 'material' was recognized in the 1920s and became a useful design tool by the mid-century. Skilful lighting allowed for theatricality, narrative, and a new emphasis on structure and space. "The Structure of Light" tells the story of the career of Richard Kelly, the field's most influential figure. Six historians, architects, and practitioners explore Kelly's unparalleled influence on modern architecture and his lighting designs for some of the 20th century's most iconic buildings: Philip Johnson's Glass House; Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum; Eero Saarinen's GM Technical Center; and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, among many others. This publication demonstrates the range of applications, building types, and artistic solutions he employed to achieve a 'nocturnal modernity' that would render buildings evocatively different at night. The survival of Kelly's rich correspondence and extensive diaries allows an in-depth look at the triumphs and uncertainties of a young profession in the making.

Summary:
Tous les documents proviennent des archives de Yona Friedman Budapest-born and resident in Paris, Yona Friedman has since the mid-twentieth century pioneered the concept of 'mobile architecture', whereby town planning and housing is conceived by users, and anticipates the flux and uncertainty of future users' needs. Friedman's concentration on 'mobile architecture' – a position gaining in popularity today – has imbued his work with great social generosity, and an improving ideology. This compilation of Friedman's output offers a comprehensive overview of one of today's most influential architects and urban theorists, and includes plans, sketches, drawings, models, collages and installations.

Bridging the domains of urban design, infrastructure, landscape, and architecture, AGPS architecture approaches problem solving as a collaborative enterprise, exploring the relationship between idea and practice and emphasizing the importance of the functional, technical, economic, environmental, and aesthetic in design and construction methods. This publication is the first comprehensive survey of the projects imagined and completed by AGPS architecture. Complete with color photographs of each of the projects, floor plans, sections, and elevations, as well as several essays that delve into frequently overlooked aspects of architectural design, this volume serves as both a portfolio and a sort of exploration of latent, but recognizable traits that are as much a part of the buildings as their physical manifestation.
