Summary:
The transformation that has taken place in Mallorca during the last 50 years was unimaginable, especially for elderly residents. However, the last decade has been the one in which the island suffered a lack of control more centred on speculation and not so much on necessity. Certainly Mallorca depends on tourism (no other alternative, providing similar or better prospects, has been presented yet). Aware of the need, we built a territory too fast. In this book, a look from the outside is proposed, taken by people with a relationship to the island, with an affection for it, but who, from a distance, can offer a fresher opionion of what could happen. Texts are provided by architects, designers, biolgists, etc. Photographs are by Jordi Bernado.

Summary:
In the course of the 20th century it became increasingly clear that architecture is by no means a timeless medium. The late 1960s in particular were marked by research into techniques that would allow buildings to be adapted to suit the requirements of the day. This often led to buildings that were programmatically neutral and characterless. The new challenge facing(...)

Summary:
In the course of the 20th century it became increasingly clear that architecture is by no means a timeless medium. The late 1960s in particular were marked by research into techniques that would allow buildings to be adapted to suit the requirements of the day. This often led to buildings that were programmatically neutral and characterless. The new challenge facing architects is designing for the unknown, for the unpredictable. 'Form follows function' is giving way to concepts like polyvalence and semi-permanence. New spatial and constructional structures generate freedom, taking time as their departure-point. Alongside theoretical reflections on such time-based architecture, this book illustrates countless projects involving the time factor, ranging from Shigeru Ban's Naked house, an apartment building in Malmö by Gert Wingardh and Kas Oosterhuis's Emotive house to OMA's mixed-use complex 'De Rotterdam'.

Architectural design because it focuses on the work of twelve practices and turns a critical eye on contemporary French production. Photography because it presents atypical images made by photographers who are active in contemporary art, and who propose a new realist view of archtiecture - since the buildings are photographed in their inhabited state and everyday context.

"Small Houses in Finland" presents a selection of the best single-family houses in Finland from the last twenty-five years. Each of the 29 houses presented shows a different approach to the design of a small house, from the site placement to the plan layout, facades, massing, and use of materials, all the way to the handling of the construction details. All the houses were individually designed for single families, and are situated in different environments, from the countryside to the city and from the seashore inland. The houses in this collection have been selected by architect Esa Piironen, who himself has designed a number of small houses. Characteristic of his approach has been a commitment to environmentally friendly and humane architecture.

Summary:

Summary:
Chicago is quintessential apartment dweller’s city. Landmark apartment houses designed by renowned architects and decorators, past and present - Howard Van Doren Shaw, Benjamin Marshall, David Adler, Mies van der Rohe, SOM, Tigerman McCurry, Vinci Hamp, and Lucien Lagrange - have afforded dramatic views and fabled luxury to apartment residents. "Chicago Apartments: A Century of Lakefront Luxury" presents a unique history of the nearly 100 elevator structures whose amenities, unusual interior spaces, architectural features, and distinctive innovations define the history of Chicago apartment design. Chicago historian Neil Harris traces essential themes in the development of the city and its apartment culture, profiling each apartment building with new research, floor plans, and never published archival duotone photographs of famed buildings dating from 1883 to 2004, including 500 North Lake Shore Drive, 209 East Lake Shore Drive, 1301 North Astor, Marina Towers, and the Hancock. The preface by Sara Paretsky, whose celebrated detective V. I. Warshawki is an astute observer of Chicago’s built landscape and its inhabitants, offers a literary voice to this first-time study of the architectural and cultural history of these buildings.

Jussi Tiainen takes photographs in a manner such that the building speaks for its own character, mostly without people or any form of decoration in the picture which could mis-focus or blur the accuracy of the photogenic architectural timelessness. This book is a photographic statement about the city of Helsinki with its contemporary high-quality architecture built at the turn of the Millennium. All the featured buildings were built and photographed between 1998 and 2001.

Summary:
"Living in the Lowlands" offers a kaleidoscopic overview of one of the most important themes in Dutch architecural history: living and the home environment. Specific periods are addressed on the basis of selected projects, among wich: Amsterdam's Vondelstraat by P.J.H. Cuijpers, Plan Zuid by Berlage, Rotterdam's Pendrecht and Alexanderpolder neighbourhoods, Almere and Ypenburg. Utopian designs by the architects H.T. Wijdeveld, Cornelis van Eesteren and OMA are also included. Fifteen 'domestic scenes' illustrate important points in the history of housing construction in the Netherlands since 1850. Each 'domestic landscape'is described by a different author in a brief and sometimes highly personal text, illustrated with visual documentation from the collection of the Netherlands Architecture Institute. "Living in the Lowlands" accompanies the new permanent exhibition in the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Rotterdam.
