Summary:
Winding its way southward through the Philadelphia communities of Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy, as well as the verdant rural countryside of Gwynedd, Whitemarsh, and Wyndmoor, the Wissahickon Creek flows through a region of both unsurpassed natural beauty and some of the nation’s most exquisite residential architecture. The marvelous landscape that attracted early travelers and settlers became the setting for glorious estates that celebrated the connection between the natural and the built environment. From the mid-19th through the mid-20th century, three generations of prominent regional and national architects designed houses that have endured as magnificent examples of their own time, and remain eminently livable homes to this day.

Summary:
Nature has always furnished stimulating ideas for the design of architecture, both vernacular and in the work of major architects. Inspired by Nature: Plants looks at how the plant world serves as a useful source of inspiration, whether intentional or inconscious, for great contemporary architecture. Accompanying the images of built examples, ranging from houses to hotels, schools, and commercial and industrial projects, are botanical drawings and an explanation of why natural forms make good models for structure. The visual analogies underline how architects can find elegant solution and create new, sustainable, and efficient architectonic forms by the close and unsderstanding observation of nature.

Summary:
The urban and cultural climate of Rotterdam changed radically between 1970 and 2000. Opinions differ about what the most important changes were, and when they occurred. "Imagine a metropolis" shows that it was first and foremost a new perspective on Rotterdam that stimulated the development of the city during this period. If the Rotterdam of 1970 was still a city with an identity crises that wanted to be small rather than large and cosy rather than commercial, by 2000 Rotterdam had the image of the most metropolitan of all Dutch cities. Artists and other cultural practitioners – a group these days termed the ‘creative class’ – were the first to advance this metropolitan vision, thereby paving the way for the New Rotterdam that would begin to take concrete shape at the end of the 1980s. "Imagine a metropolis" goes on to show that this New Rotterdam is returning to its nineteenth-century identity and the developments of the inter-war years and the period of post-war reconstruction.

Summary:
The author describes and analyzes the architecture of the palaces, synagogues, railroad stations, and department stores that architects and developers designed and built in Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, New York, Chicago and other cities. This richly illustrated history begins with the dramatic changes in nineteenth-century society and culture that liberated the first generation of Jews from the ghettos of Venice, Prague, and Frankfurt. It concludes with the modernism of the 1920s and 1930s. The book combines family history, urban history, and the history of architecture and architects with a history of Jews and Jewish thought.
