Summary:
Autrian architects play a significant role in today's world-wide development of a sculptural form of expression. This phenomenon has its roots in similar streams in the past, which belong to a rich cultural heritage from centuries gone by. The short historical background, stating with the comment about the Gothic Stephan' Cathedral in Vienna, acts as an introduction to the subject, followed by examples of the spatial splendour of the Baroque, and a glimpse on the mouvement of Modernism to the immediate examples of «sculptural architecture» from Austria's past. The main comprehensive part is dedicated to examples of contemporary architecture. Completed projects of buildings and visions of over 50 architects and their teams are on display through media of photos, plans and models. Text in English and Chinese.

Summary:
"I trace my ancestry back to the Mayflower," writes Andrew S. Dolkart. "Not to the legendary ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, but to the more prosaic tenement on the southeast corner of East Broadway and Clinton Street named the Mayflower, where my father was born in 1914 to Russian-Jewish immigrants." For Dolkart, the experience of being raised in a tenement became a metaphor for the life that was afforded countless thousands of other immigrant children growing up in Lower Manhattan during the past century and more. Dolkart presents for us a precise and informative biography of a typical tenement house in New York City that became, in 1988, the site for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Dolkart documents, analyzes, and interprets the architectural and social history of this building at 97 Orchard Street, starting in the 1860s when it was erected, moving on to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when the neighborhood started to change, and concluding in the present day as the building is reincarnated as the museum. This book is a lasting tribute to the legacy of immigrants and their children, who were part of the transformation of New York City and the fabric of everyday American urban life.

Summary:
This two-volume catalogue of the "10th International Architecture Exhibition" presents an anthology of ideas centered around this year's theme: the meta-city. The changes in the physical and social structure of today's city have resulted in a new kind of civilian agglomeration that extends beyond the traditional form, concept, and boundaries of the city, causing profound transformations in the composition of its population and working habits. The International Exhibition, curated by Richard Burdett, will focus on the transformations of cities around the world, featuring New York, London, Berlin, Moscow, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai, Mexico City, São Paulo Beirut, Istanbul, Johannesburg, and Lagos. Additionally, the biennale will propound a manifesto for rational development of cities in the 21st century. This book will be the definitive catalogue of what is perhaps the most important architecture exhibition in the world.
