Summary:

Summary:
Preservation is ordinarily reserved for architecture that is unique. So how would we go about preserving buildings that are utterly generic? Such is the case with Belyayevo, an ordinary residential district in Moscow. Belyayevo is a typical microrayon – the standardised neighbourhood system that successive Soviet regimes laid out across the USSR in what was the most expansive programme of industrialised construction the world has ever seen. Belyayevo’s buildings, and the desolate spaces between them, are identical to thousands of others, but is it different? Kuba Snopek argues that it is. Home to many of the artists of the Moscow Conceptualism school, the place was written into the character of their art. Snopek argues that this intangible heritage is the key to saving a neighbourhood many feel has had its day. But as Russia comes to terms with ist Soviet legacy, will such arguments fall on deaf ears?

''Portugal Lessons'' is a project of laba, or Laboratory Basel, founded in 2011 as a satellite studio of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne’s School of Architecture. The book presents the studio’s case studies of the country and processes of urbanization. Rooted in laba’s latest research, it explores architectural forms of life and housing: whom we live with or open our home to and how permeable that boundary should be. The findings are presented in more than two hundred graphics, drawings, plans, and photographs. The book also features proposals for architectural interventions by laba’s students, all of them tackling issues of housing.

Enthusiasm for the expressionist vision of a new modern society also captured the cities of Eastern Europe. The surviving fragments in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia bear witness to a determined will of form and a rich, skillful handling of color, material, and light. The third volume in this series, ''Fragment of Metropolis – East'' documents more than one hundred and fifty buildings throughout Eastern Europe, including works by Otto Bartning, Peter Behrens, Max Berg, and many others.

Summary:
In the eighteenth century the Alps became the subject of a new view of nature, which crystallized in the sublime. Oscillating between fear and fascination, this sensual experience triggered a thrilling borderline experience: travelers ventured to the mountain world full of longing and projected a variety of different dreams onto the "wild nature" that had yet to be explored. To what extent has the sublime influenced architecture in the Alps, from the early days of tourism to the present? Prompted by this question, the author analyzes Alpine architecture in its historical context and offers a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. This is a book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.

Summary:
The 13th edition of the Flanders Architectural Review brings together the most high-profile examples of recent architecture in Flanders. Like the mustard factory on the cover, the selected buildings raise questions about the significance of form in architecture. Almost fifty projects are covered by means of extensive plans and photos and they give rise to a critical reflection on current developments in Flemish architecture. The book includes articles that deal with such topics as the poetry of utility buildings, the responsibility of architecture for the landscape, the exploration of a new scale and the individual character of Flemish architecture abroad. What the visual essays by four leading photographers have in common is a serious interest in the concrete physical experience. They view the architectural object not as something static, but as a beckoning space that should be explored, studied, tried and tested.
