Summary:
The last 25 years or so have witnessed redevelopment in the City of London on an unprecedented scale, following the deregulation of the financial markets, the so-called “Big Bang,” in the mid-1980s. As the City has earned its place as a true global financial center, the majority of its office space has been rebuilt, and developers have taken a much more adventurous approach, commissioning such leading British and international architects as Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, and Richard Rogers. New City is the first book to examine in depth the creation of one of the world’s largest collections of cutting-edge architecture.

This is the first major book to study English architecture between 1945 and 1975 in its entirety. Challenging previous scholarship on the subject and uncovering vast amounts of new material at the boundaries between architectural and social history, Elain Harwood structures the book around building types to reveal why the architecture takes the form it does. Buildings of all budgets and styles are examined, from major universities to the modest café. The book is illustrated with stunning new photography that reveals the logic, aspirations, and beauty of hundreds of buildings throughout England, at the point where many are disappearing or are being mutilated.

Summary:
From the iconic modernism of Luis Barragán to the brightly colored postmodern forms of Ricardo Legoretta, this important historical document deals with the plurality of architectural styles and voices in Mexico during the 20th and early 21st centuries. Referencing French philosopher Michel Foucault’s idea of effective history in which knowledge does not encompass absolute truths delivered in traditional historical texts but rather fragments, shortening its vision to the things nearest it, Architecture in Mexico offers a new reading of the diverse interests at stake in historical Mexican architecture—its production and its subsequent reception. The volume pursues comprehension beyond built forms and closer to the ideas (and ideologies) that gave rise to them.

Summary:

A critically acclaimed history of Chicago at mid-century, featuring many of the incredible personalities that shaped American culture Before air travel overtook trains, nearly every coast-to-coast journey included a stop in Chicago, and this flow of people and commodities made it the crucible for American culture and innovation. Populated with an incredible cast of characters, including Mahalia Jackson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Sun Ra, Simone de Beauvoir, Nelson Algren, Gwendolyn Brooks, Studs Turkel, and Mayor Richard J. Daley, "The Third Coast" recalls the prominence of the Windy City in all its grandeur.

Summary:
In the years after 1933 several hundred architects were forced to emigrate from Germany by the National Socialist dictatorship. Between seventy and eighty of them went to Great Britain – in part, prominent representatives of Modernism like Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Erwin Gutkind, Arthur Korn and Marcel Breuer, but also less well known architects who had adopted very divergent positions. A few emigrants very quickly and successfully managed to gain a foothold in an environment that was for the most part unfamiliar to them, while for others exile meant a serious break in their career. The book offers an overview of the topic and presents select buildings in detail. Moreover, hitherto largely unpublished documents from the estate of Walter Gropius provide a direct insight into his life and work in British exile.
