Summary:
Andrew Jackson Downing was among the first to develop aesthetic theories that differed sharply from those perpetuated in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Europe. He designed houses based upon American democratic values and advocated for domestic design that would satisfy basic human needs along with the desire to live well. In this book, Caren Yglesias, a practicing architect, examines Downing's legacy with an eye for relevance to today's domestic landscape. She builds on Downing's work in order to redefine what makes a "complete," or nurturing and fulfilling, house and grounds.

Summary:
This publication brings together an array of Norway and Switzerland's 19th-century artists, who shared an interest in capturing their native dramatic alpine landscapes. This illustrated book also examines the differences that climate, character, and political regimes have imposed on artistic practices. Distinct social and political situations in Norway and Switzerland yielded fundamental differences in the two countries' painting traditions. As Norway endured a long struggle for freedom, Switzerland remained proudly independent. While Norway was poor, isolated, and dependent for survival on its natural resources, the Swiss enjoyed prosperity, a cosmopolitan society, and prestige as an early center of industry. The authors examine how this was manifested in the landscape paintings of such prominent artists as Johan Christian Dahl, Thomas Fearnley, Peder Balke, and Alexandra Calame. This book also supplies a helpful chronology and brief artist biographies.

Summary:
Mist-shrouded landscapes and remote farmsteads represent just one of the Waldviertel’s many faces: with the expansion of Krems into a cultural center pulsing with vitality, important new architectural milestones have been set. A pronounced environmental awareness is an essential part of the Waldviertel’s identity and has also found concrete expression in the work of the region’s innovative architectural offices. The freshness of summer has been historically significant in the Waldviertel, as the public baths and villas of the interwar period attest. At the same time, along the border to the Czech Republic, paralyzed for decades by the Iron Curtain, it is the confrontation with the region’s own history that is most apparent. In short, the Waldviertel is in a state of flux, a status that its architecture both reflects and is central in shaping. The new third volume in this series is presented by Springer Publishing and addresses over 160 buildings from 1919 to the present in essays.

Summary:
Frederick Law Olmsted is best remembered for his landscape architecture, from New York's Central Park to Boston's Emerald Necklace to Stanford University's campus, Olmsted was also an influential journalist, early voice for the environment, and abolitionist credited with helping dissuade England from joining the South in the Civil War. This momentous career was shadowed by a tragic personal life, also fully portrayed here. Most of all, he was a social reformer. He didn't simply create places that were beautiful in the abstract. An awesome and timeless intent stands behind Olmsted's designs, allowing his work to survive to the present day. With our urgent need to revitalize cities and a widespread yearning for green space, his work is more relevant now than it was during his lifetime.

Summary:
Landscape architect, urban planner, teacher, and social visionary: over the course of a sixty-year career, Lawrence Halprin (1916-2009) reshaped the spaces we inhabit and our ways of moving through them. Featuring more than ninety black-and-white and one hundred color reproductions of photographs, plans, and sketchbooks, A Life Spent Changing Places is Halprin's own account of how a young boy who listened to the fireside chats of FDR on the radio became the man who designed the memorial to that president in the nation's capital. It is a book about the invention and reinvention of an extraordinary man over the span of decades and how he helped to reframe the world around him.
