Summary:
A lean-to in an urban park, featuring a blue tarpaulin roof, a hinged door, and a bamboo blind. A car-shaped cardboard hut, lashed together with rope and sitting on a dolly. Temporary lodging under a bridge, incorporating a piece of playground equipment into its design. Each of these structures is an example of what Japanese artist and architect Kyohei Sakaguchi calls a "zero-yen house".Built by the homeless of Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, zero-yen houses employ discarded and found materials, including pieces of wood and corrugated roofing, temple ornaments, blankets, shipping pallets, an umbrella, and those ubiquitous blue tarps. They also incorporate into their assembly the imminence of their disassembly: at any moment, they may have to be taken apart and moved.Since his days as a university student at the turn of the millennium, Sakaguchi has been studying the kinds of shelters that street people have created for themselves in Japan's three largest cities. Based in Tokyo, he appears to be obsessed with this peculiar and transient form of "vernacular architecture". Sakaguchi uses images, descriptions, and even facsimiles of the improvised homes of the homeless as a way of celebrating human resourcefulness and ingenuity. These dwellings, he tells us, are worthy of our interest and admiration rather than our indifference, our scorn, or even our pity. They can instruct us on an approach to architecture that is the reverse of overconsumption and resource depletion.

Summary:
In the 15 structures illustrated in this book, Trulove highlights cabins with the most modern of conveniences. Built of steel, glass, and recycled materials--though some, if not most, still use wood--these cabins blend into their natural settings, inclusive of vegetation. Although the interiors highlighted are a refuge from the outdoors, the porches, windows, and doors onto the surrounding forests are integrated within. Trulove includes floor plans, elevations, and site plans that will appeal to more do-it-yourself readers. The great variation in size and natural settings of these cabins allows readers to find locations and new concepts and applications of the traditional cabin that will work with their own desires and in their own environs.

Summary:

The materials used in the construction of single-family residences are increasingly important and on many occasions become the focal point of the construction. Advances in the composition, fabrication and application of materials allows for the creation of structures and forms that were unthinkable just a few decades ago. This volume contains chapters that display residences constructed using materials like metal, glass, wood, stone or concrete. The singularity of these homes is marked by the predominant use of one material, which in turn is linked with the original concept of the house.

Summary:
Residential design provides a rich testing ground for architectural innovation. Intimate scales and specific programs inspire distinctive homes, and comparatively small budgets are catalysts for exploring nontraditional materials. Modern Shoestring proves that building a contemporary house can be affordable and shows how constraints actually stimulate the most creative design solutions. Eighteen residential projects are presented, with emphasis on the goals of the owners, the site, and the cost in the design process. Collections determine floor plans, observatories are built for starry rural nights, and found and industrial materials such as highway construction remnants, laboratory counters, plastic water bottles, and discarded chalkboards keep costs low while imbuing structures with character. These ingenious designs range in cost from $50 to $220 per square foot and represent geographical settings from Los Angeles to Anchorage to East Hampton.
