Summary:
. . / The call for the "Inside Density" colloquium, organized by neTHCA in november 1999, evoked papers addressing issues of density, congestion and networking. The aim of the colloquium was to explore the theoretical underpinnings of the concept of density and to criticize the naïve use of density indexes as markers of good planning. The colloquium brought together an international range of renowned scholars, promising young researchers, and practising architects. This volume, co-edited by Hilde Heynen and David Vanderburgh, presents the best texts, some in English and some in French, that resulted from the colloquium. It contains contributions by key-note speakers Pascal Amphoux and Mark Wigley, as well as papers by Tom Avermaete, Dieter De Clercq, Alexander D'Hooghe, Marc Glaudemans, Leslie Jaye Kavanaugh, Bernard Kormoss, Hubert Lionnez/Roberto Zancan, Olivier Mathieu/Li Mei Tsien, Anne Mie Depuydt/Erik Van Daele, Kai Vöckler, Sarah Whiting, Paola Yacoub/Michel Lasserre . . .

Summary:
This book offers a comprehensive account of modern Spanish culture, tracing its dramatic and often unexpected development from its beginnings after the Revolution of 1868 to the present day. Specially-commissioned essays by leading experts provide analyses of the historical and political background of modern Spain, the culture of the major autonomous regions (notably Castile, Catalonia, and the Basque Country), and the country’s literature: narrative, poetry, theatre and the essay. Spain’s recent development is divided into three main phases: from 1868 to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War; the period of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco; and the post-Franco arrival of democracy. The concept of ‘Spanish culture’ is investigated, and there are studies of Spanish painting and sculpture, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and the modern media. A chronology and guides to further reading are provided, making the volume an invaluable introduction to the politics, literature and culture of modern Spain.

Summary:
This book examines modern-day Switzerland and its changing spatial reality. Describing settlement areas as either ”urban” or ”rural” is no longer apt as we now live in a collage of urban, suburban, and rural elements which together form conglomerations with several centres over large areas of land. This requires new political solutions, challenging the institutional framework of federalism and the concept of local government. The study comprises contributions by experts from the fields of architecture, sociology, geography, politics and economics, which take into account the various perspectives. The prominent Dutch architect Winy Maas from MVRDV presents as an outsider a qualified vision for a Switzerland of the future, and also provides visual material to illustrate other contributions.

Summary:

Summary:
Published to accompany an exhibition he has conceived for the Fondation Cartier in Paris, this book examines the philosophical issues raised by our confrontation with accidents and their impact on our world. Accidents capture our attention, surprise or shock us, disrupt or ultimately alter the course of our existence. Whether significant or insignificant, benign or disastrous, accidents always reveal something about ourselves and the systems we construct. For Virilio, to invent the ship is to invent the shipwreck, to invent electricity is to invent electrocution. Accidents are consequently, in his view, inherent in all technological systems. This catalogue features over 200 illustrations, including press photographs, paintings, and engravings representing natural and industrial accidents from the past three centuries. It also contains reproductions of the works of the many artists included in the exhibit, most notably Lebbeus Woods, Nancy Rubins, Stephen Vitiello, Cai Guo Qiang, Bruce Conner, Tony Oursler, Jonas Mekas, and Jem Cohen.

Summary:
The third volume in this exciting series presenting young architecture and design talents, ArchiLab's Earth Buildings turns its focus to building with the land. Projects from thirty of the most innovative young practices of today—including Field Operations, Tom Leader, NOX, Servo, Vicente Guallart, and Kengo Kuma—confront and offer proposals and solutions to issues such as dwindling natural resources, land engineering, the city as ecosystem, and the sensitive development of brown sites. Presented through extensive plans, computer renderings, and photographs, buildings and large-scale schemes reveal an almost infinite array of breathtaking ideas for the future, an inspiration for a generation of designers, practitioners, and policymakers. Essays by international critics Frédéric Migayrou, Bart Lootsma, Manuel Gausa, and others consider the earth's economy and suggest how contemporary architects might best and most responsibly respond to our fragile planet in a technology-driven age.

Summary:
"The architectural project" considers the practice of architectural design as it has developed during the last two centuries. In this challenging interpretation of design education and its effect on design process and products, Argentinean scholar Alfonso Corona-Martínez emphasizes the distinction between an architectural project, created in the architect's mind and materialized as a set of drawings on paper, and the realized three-dimensional building. Corona-Martínez demonstrates how representation plays a substantial role in determining both the notion and the character of architecture, and he traces this relationship from the Renaissance into the Modern era, giving detailed considerations of Functionalism and Typology. His argument clarifies the continuity in the practice of design method through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a continuity that has been obscured by the emphasis on changing goals instead of design procedures.
