Summary:
Squeezed between the two rival Cold War blocs, Yugoslav architecture consistently adhered to a modernist trajectory. As a founding nation of the Non-Aligned Movement, Yugoslavia became a major exporter of modernist architecture to Africa and the Middle East in a postcolonial world. By merging a variety of local traditions and contemporary international influences in the context of a unique Yugoslav brand of socialism, often described as the “Third Way,” local architects produced a veritable “parallel universe” of modern architecture during the 45 years of the country’s existence. This remarkable body of work has sparked recurrent international interest, yet a rigorous interpretative study never materialized in the United States until now.

Summary:
London has always been known for its iconic buildings, but the city has recently witnessed an explosion of new architecture from the world’s most acclaimed architects. This breathtaking volume offers a fascinating look at the city’s rapidly changing skyline and celebrates the enormous array of styles, materials, and cutting-edge technology that have been employed by today’s leading architects. The projects profiled here—brought to life by photographer Richard Schulman—range from dance and aquatic centers to world-class museums and global office headquarters. The book includes Rafael Viñoly’s “Walkie-Talkie” and “The Gherkin” by Foster + Partners, as well as Renzo Piano’s mixed-use skyscraper, “The Shard,” across the Thames. Tucked into a medieval alley, OMA’s New Court Rothschild Bank nimbly juxtaposes contemporary features with more traditional ones. Meanwhile, alongside St. Paul’s Cathedral, Jean Nouvel’s One New Change cleverly plays off its storied environs with an ingeniously constructed glass block that allows for multiple views of the iconic church. From the Tate Modern extension to the Emirates Airline tram, and from the Peckham Library to the US Embassy building, no new stone is left unturned or unremarked upon. This book demonstrates how one of the world’s oldest cities manages to feel eternally new and exciting.

Summary:
Vienna-based architect Martin Feiersinger and his brother, artist and photographer Werner Feiersinger, have traveled extensively across Northern Italy in order to document the region’s modern architecture after World War II. "Italomodern 1 and 2" are the result of their travels, the most authoritative survey of Northern Italy’s architecture between 1946 and 1976. In their study, they have focused exclusively on distinctive buildings rather than entire urban structures, and they have selected the included projects as exemplary representations of neorealism, rationalism, brutalism, and organic styles. "Italomodern 1" features 84 buildings and "Italomodern 2" contains an additional 132 buildings. All of them are represented with photographs, a concise text, the exact address, and selected floor plans, sections, or elevations. The images present a subjective point of view, showing each building in its present state. An appendix provides rich information on the architects and other selected buildings and further reading for each firm. The books offer a glimpse into an era when society’s aspirations found expression in the built environment. Each volume is self-contained and also makes an insightful and useful guide for architecture lovers and travelers.
