Summary:
Biblical in origin, the Sukkah is a fascinating 1,500-year-old Jewish ritual of construction and habitation. Erected for only one week in the fall, its premise is paradoxical, as it encompasses issues of both diaspora and belonging. The construction guidelines are as follows: a Sukkah must have at least two-and-a-half walls and a thatched roof through which the stars are visible. Here, Mimi Levy Lipis' photographs record examples of contemporary Sukkah architecture from Europe, Israel and the U.S. These include a Sukkah on a truck parked in front of a restaurant in Manhattan; Sukkot on lonely parking lots in London; a Sukkah built for eternity in Berlin; criss-cross stacked booths in Jerusalem; and Sukkot made of the same fabric in London and Tel Aviv.

Summary:

Summary:
This illustrated publication reaches back five centuries to document the evolution and ingenuity of house design in the British Isles. The architecture of Britain’s houses displays a dizzying variety of styles and details. Brimming with 600 full-color photographs, this book annotates hundreds of examples from every conceivable angle : from gables and pediments to chimneys and roofs; from bow windows and casements to fanlights and door furniture. Armed with a career’s worth of experience and research, Philippa Lewis takes readers up and down the country to feature examples of typically British building, including cottages, manor houses, castles, bungalows, and flats. She also looks at houses built from a wide variety of materials, including stone, glass, wood, brick, and even corrugated iron, in different settings such as rural, suburban, seaside, and urban. Lively texts help identify specific details and place them in their historical context, as well as offering compelling examples of how innovative conversions of structures such as watermills, gatehouses, and churches reflect and sustain their environment.

Summary:
Over the last twenty years Barcelona has reached the apex of its public appeal, and the time has come for a critical evaluation of its recent past. Barcelona is an example of how a European and Mediterranean city can be radically transformed. Starting from the 1980s, through investment in contemporary architecture, tourism, and advanced services, the city abandoned its traditional identity as an industrial center. After 1992, following the Olympics and the international success the city enjoyed as a result, Barcelona became a "model" city, renowned for its architecture, urban projects, attention to urban morphology, and context. In this book, the author gives a critical account of the various "stages" in Barcelona’s recent history, putting them into historical context and drawing parallels with local and international currents.
