Over the last 50 years, the America House in Berlin has been the focal point of cultural and political discussions and international controversies. Protected by barbed wire, it was attacked with eggs and Molotov cocktails; Robert Kennedy and Willy Brandt visited; millions of Berliners gained access to information in its library and at screenings of films; Lyonel Feininger and Robert Rauschenberg exhibited their works there. In addition, the building is an architectural gem. Built in 1956-57 by Bruno Grimmek, the delicate, open structure is based on the concept of the "idea of space"-a fluid space that is borne by a transparent exterior membrane. In fall 2014 the building will be the new home of C/O Berlin, the exhibition center for photography and visual media.

The show takes the viewer on a journey through which affect, evocation, empathy, synesthesia, the unconscious and sensual perception live together, providing a context for both reflection and engagement. Beyond the physical presence of the artworks, the exhibition explores subtle themes such as transcendence, and the ways in which an artwork can be both immanent and starkly present, while engaging with conceptual or political undercurrents. Contributors include Melissa Bennett, Jennifer Fisher and Jim Drobnick, and Gabrielle Moser.

Summary:
Artists have utilized walking as an autonomous form of art, a subject in their work, and as social practice since the early 20th century. Today walking continues to offer a salient means for artists to challenge social, political, and economic orders through a radical remapping of civic space. In this book, Lexi Lee Sullivan traces the history of walking as an aesthetic action from the Dadaists to contemporary ramblers. Titled after Michelangelo Pistoletto’s performance Walking Sculpture, the catalogue features 50 color illustrations ranging from photographs of Yvonne Rainer’s street actions to Francis Alÿs’s fantastical processions, poems by Cole Swensen, and a new project by artist Helen Mirra, who produces poetic meditations on landscape, ecology, and locomotion. Sculpture, film, video, photography, and performance converge to address the multi-disciplinary practice of ambulation through the cityscape and the countryside. For those who hike; march in fundraisers, protests, or parades; walk the dog; stroll in the park; or commute daily, this catalogue will invite new thought into basic human movement.
