Summary:

Summary:
This book has been published to coincide with the exhibition Jeppe Hein, in the Espace 315, Centre Pompidou, Paris, sept.-nov. 2005.

Summary:
Firminy is a small French mining town, and is the site of the largest collection of Le Corbusier’s architecture outside of Chandigarh, India. Monumental in scale and civic ambition at its inception, the development at Firminy followed Le Corbusier’s concept of La Ville Radieuse (the Radiant City). The buildings at Firminy were never completed due to local industrial decline, and in recent years have suffered from political manipulation and physical neglect. The current state of the site is documented in Arni Haraldsson’s photographic series from 1999. Using a historically minded and architecturally oriented curiosity, Haraldsson sets these buildings and their modernist utopianism within the frame of the local inhabitants’ conviction of the social and historical value of Corbusier’s life and work.

Summary:
This book accompanies Geoffrey Farmer’s installation "The Blacking Factory" which comprised two interrelated works: a sculptural installation in the form of a large truck trailer, and a film work depicting a window of the Contemporary Art Gallery shattering from an explosive concussion. With these works, Farmer utilizes the technological expertise of the film industry to create analogies between increasingly sophisticated mechanics of display and the artifice behind the social production of meaning and value. The truck trailer is fabricated in mimicry of those used by movie production companies — an increasingly common sight on the streets of Vancouver — and alludes to the transportation of such necessities as props, lighting systems and costumes necessary to the creation of illusions. The catalogue includes texts by Nanaimo-based poet and critic Peter Culley and exhibition curator Reid Shier.
