Product Description Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov (b. 1957) understands fear. While living for three decades under a dictatorship, he was no stranger to the secret police. In his art, however, he has maintained a level of humor and sincerity that is as remarkable as it is touching. Fears, which was first exhibited at Documenta 12 in 2007, consists of 99 drawings on paper. Each of the drawings is 19 x 28 centimeters and bears a handwritten caption. Together they represent a catalogue of worries, apprehensions, and phobias that veer from the hilarious to the arresting.

The writing of history, politics and culture have in the past concentrated on the male heterosexual subject. That is who we learn about in schools, history books and what we experience in the art museums and on TV. That is who has been chosen to represent our shared history. But what about all the others – where are they in the cultural landscape?

This two-volume publication, produced on the occasion of an exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh and Modern Art Oxford, is both a catalogue to the exhibition and a compendium of notes and drawings for as yet unrealised works. Summary:

Summary:
The dictionary. The ubiquitous high-gloss fashion ad. The fraught relationship between artist and critic. Sleeping Beauty ties these disparate strands of our everyday lives together only to strip away everything we thought we knew about each of them. A collaborative work by the artist John Sparagana and the critic Mieke Bal, this truly cutting-edge work takes the shape of a conversation between his creations—distressed, or “fatigued,” magazine pages—and her words, imagining anew the relationships of image to text and of art to those who write about it.
