How can you navigate towards something when there are no fixed points when you cannot determine your position? How do you know where to go, or even know when you have got there? This fourth volume in the Archifutures series investigates how architecture, traditionally considered to be a future?oriented activity, can best respond as we find ourselves on the threshold of a “post-futurist” condition where the future is not necessarily ahead of us, but everywhere and – perhaps most especially – “now”.

Summary:
The first volume of the collection maps the work of the institutions and organisations involved in communicating the new and innovative thought and practice leading architecture today, highlighting the strategies they use and programmes they run to support this. Essays and interviews from the Museum of Architecture and Design, Ljubljana, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, Rome, the Swiss Architecture Museum, Basel, CANactions, Kiev, Prishtina Architecture Week, Kosovo, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale and others give working examples of the roles that these organisations and institutions play in communication and education for those both within and beyond the field of architecture. A particular highlight of the book is a “collage conversation”, a visual dialogue between Superstudio co-founder Cristiano Toraldo di Francia and Guillermo López of MAIO, with some images specially commissioned for the publication.

Summary:
“Street architecture” is an ethos based not on a proposed urban theory, but on urban observation. Like a puzzle formed by pieces of various scales, it represents an array of forces, from the client’s brief to the builder’s realisation. In this book by Karin Templin the residential designs of Amsterdam-based architect Hans van der Heijden are examined in the context of housing and urban design practice, as seen in the street architecture of Florence and other European cities. Besides providing insights into Van der Heijden’s design approach, she looks at the principles of street architecture which could be of interest to urban architects and students, as well as developers and planners.

Summary:
globalized society, and it will continue to do so in the future. Already today, the demands of the job no longer correspond to the profile on which classical architectural training is based. In this context, the question that arises is no longer that of the building alone, but also that of a changed approach to building and new pathways within design itself. This is where Explorations comes in: internationally celebrated authors, all of whom are professors as well and hence directly involved in the processes they describe, address the principal topics of contemporary architectural research. Taking the works of their own design studios as examples they offer concrete discussions of those topics and place them in the context of applied research and practice. Short and accessible essays on the most important architectural movements of the twentieth century clarify the relationship between the subjects discussed and canonical architectural research.

Summary:
Cutural Cues is the sixth book featured the work of the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship, which brings young innovators in architectural design to the Yale School of Architecture. This book includes the studio research and projects of Joe Day of Deegan Day Design in “NOWplex” a cinema in L.A., Tom Wiscombe of Tom Wiscombe Architecture in “The Broad Redux,” for a new interpretation of the Broad Museum in L.A., and Adib Cure & Carie Penabad of Cure Penabade in the studio “Havana: Housing in the Historic Center.” The studios explore contemporary interpretations of the implications of cinema, the museum, and housing, taking cues from their complex cultural and urban contexts. Along with student work, interviews with the architects about the work of their professional offices and essays framing the themes of the work are combined with insight into the pedagogical approach of these practitioner-educators.
