Summary:
On the rocky coast of the Côte d'Azur perches a crisp, white modern home, elongated and compact, cryptically called ''E.1027''. The Anglo-Irish designer Eileen Gray (1878–1976) bought the site, paid for the construction and designed the building (with the assistance of her close friend, Jean Badovici, to whom Gray gave the site, building and contents). It was Gray's first foray into architecture, and as such it was a manifesto. For Gray, the whole building—the structure, its materials, the color scheme, the windows, the hardware, the fittings, the furniture—was an experiment with new concepts of spatial relations, an attempt to create an architecture of lightness and freedom. This new publication finally places this key example of modern architecture in its rightful position in history, contextualizing the structure with essays, reproductions of archival material, photographs and numerous scale drawings.

Summary:
Peter Behrens (1868-1940) was one of the most innovative architects and designers of the early 20th century. He is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern industrial design. To this day, his buildings and designs inform our everyday lives. As head designer at AEG, Behrens created the company's turbine hall in Berlin-Moabit. This construction ranks among the most famous buildings of industrial architecture and is known around the world. But Behrens also developed AEG's logo and corporate design - long before this concept actually existed. He thus established a consistent and standardized visual appearance for all products and marketing materials, ranging from the company's letterhead to its advertisements. In addition, he was an accomplished typographer and designed trademarks which are still extant, not the least of which is the iconic font for the inscription 'Dem deutschen Volke' (To the German People) atop the Reichstag building in Berlin.

Summary:
Including newly commissioned essays by curators and scholars, this book explores how Sottsass’s art and philosophy presaged the dawn of PCs, the service industry, and the gig economy. Ettore Sottsass was an architect, industrial designer, painter, writer, photographer, and founder of the Memphis group, whose designs are undergoing an impressive renaissance. But Sottsass was more than just an important designer. His approach to object design–marked by bold colors, tactility, and vitality–was a direct response to the world of mass production and the assembly-line economy. This revelatory collection of essays by leading thinkers in the fields of political theory, economics, the media, design history, and cultural theory contextualizes Sottsass’s work in unprecedented arguments that draw a line from his work at Olivetti to the iconoclastic designs he produced at the dawn of the 21st century. Divided into five chronological sections–from the late 1950s to Sottsass’s death in 2007– these essays are illustrated with vibrant images of his work and archival photographs. Deeply researched, the book makes crucial connections between postwar Europe and America, and the way we work and live today.

Summary:
Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneer of modern design in France during the twentieth century. Her avant-garde vision was expressed in color, organic forms, and streamlined functionality, elements which are still at the heart of contemporary design today. Her furnishings were created from aluminum, rubber, chrome, leather, bamboo, and above all, wood; their appeal is timeless. This lavishly illustrated book, accompanying a major retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, explores how much in the vanguard she was in her use of materials, in her social and political awareness, and in her collaborations with artists, architects, and other designers. The show presents a global vision of her creativity, talent, and inventiveness, exploring her commitment to women and to a humanist design ethos that took into account the middle and working classes with an emphasis on rationalizing costs and space.
