Summary:
Accompanying the first retrospective of Taeuber-Arp’s work in the United States in 40 years, "Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Living abstraction" is a comprehensive survey of this multifaceted abstract artist’s innovative and wide-ranging body of work. Her background in the applied arts and dance, her involvement in the Zurich Dada movement and her projects for architectural spaces were essential to her development of a uniquely versatile and vibrant abstract vocabulary. Through her artistic output and various professional alliances, Taeuber-Arp consistently challenged the historically constructed boundaries separating fine art from craft and design. This illustrated catalog explores the artist’s interdisciplinary and cross-pollinating approach to abstraction through some 400 works, including textiles, beadwork, polychrome marionettes, architectural and interior designs, stained glass windows, works on paper, paintings and relief sculptures. It also features 15 essays that examine the full sweep of Taeuber-Arp’s career. Arranged into six chapters that follow the exhibition’s sections, these essays trace the progression of Taeuber-Arp’s creative production both chronologically and thematically. A comprehensive illustrated chronology, the first essay on Taeuber-Arp’s materials and techniques, and an exhibition checklist based on new research and analysis detail the expansive nature of Taeuber-Arp’s production.

Summary:
From the onset of her career, Charlotte Perriand was a maverick who believed in good design as a force for the betterment of society. Many young designers would be devastated by a rejection from Le Corbusier’s studio, but when the great architect told her they had no use for a female furniture designer, Perriand only became more determined to prove her mettle as an artist. Under Le Corbusier, and long after she left his studio, Perriand’s contributions to both furniture design and architecture demonstrated a unique attention to the organic artistry of nature as well as the egalitarian possibilities of the machine age. Her leftwing populist politics motivated much of her work, from modular furniture systems to major architectural projects. This monograph explores Perriand’s most famous interiors, original furniture and architectural projects, as well as her never-before-seen sketchbooks, shedding new light on her creative process and place in design history.

Summary:
A pioneer of Italian radical design, Gaetano Pesce remains one of the world’s greatest living creators—the critic Joseph Giovannini once called him the “perennial enfant terrible of iconoclastic design”. Now in his 80s, Pesce works daily from his New York studio, inventing ambitious, remote-controlled cabinets, gargantuan resin vases, and gold-leaf covered cupboards, each wearing the impressions of imperfect, unique gestures. This 116-page book is an intimate, left-of-center ode to Pesce’s work, with a focus on his furniture. It includes an extended conversation between Pesce and art critic Sophie Haigney, unusually playful portraits by Duane Michals, and newly-commissioned photographs from around the world, featuring his chairs from collectors and museums. With a limited-edition print run, this book functions as a portable exhibition: a new lens through which to understand the forever surprising, funny, and provocative design icon.

Among the great Danish designers, Finn Juhl (1912–89) ranks alongside such giants as Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. He was particularly well known for his sculptural, seemingly organic tables, chairs and sofas, but the complex interior designs that he developed in the 1940s and ‘50s were also enormously successful. These include the Danish Embassy in Washington, DC, and the conference room of the United Nations Trusteeship Council in New York. However, it is not widely known that Finn Juhl was also a talented watercolor painter who used the medium to devise gorgeous, exacting sketches of his pieces. For the first time, this publication allows readers to take a unique look at the designer’s working methods.

The exhibition Abbildungen at Kunsthalle Bielefeld, which was on display in spring 2016, is the underpinning for the conception of this publication, which turns its gaze on the media framing of Konstantin Grcic’s design objects. First researched in early magazines, company prospectuses, flyers and other print media, the selected pieces are presented as reproductions of reproductions. Abbildungen/Figures is neither a survey nor a retrospective, but an overview of Grcic’s work. The publication is accompanied by an in-depth analysis by Robin Schuldenfrei, Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, who, in presenting Konstantin Grcic’s oeuvre to the German-speaking world, examines it from a historical perspective for the first time.

Summary:
Irish-born designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is widely known today as a pioneer of both Art Deco and Modernism. In a career spanning nearly 80 years she produced innovative designs for furniture, lighting, carpets, interiors and architecture. Much less well known is that throughout her life as a designer and an architect she never stopped producing small paintings and drawings. This book is the first to focus on Eileen Gray's important but essentially private work as a painter. Eileen Gray considered herself a designer and an architect, not a painter: she viewed her work as a painter with great modesty, treating it as a private occupation and a vehicle for artistic expression during periods when she could not design furniture. Much of her artwork has disappeared, either lost in the Second World War or destroyed by the artist herself. But a body of works on paper, produced between the 1920s and the 1950s, has survived: elegant, geometric drawings and gouaches of muted tonality and subtle power. This book, which reproduces unseen material from the Eileen Gray archive and draws on Gray's correspondence with her niece Prunella Clough on the nature of painting, will be a revelation to her many followers and admirers.
