Summary:
Cuban-born, Mexico-based designer Clara Porset is renowned for her mid-century modern furniture and interior design and for her collaborations with architects such as Luis Barragán and Mario Pani. She was also an accomplished critic and writer. ''Living Design'' collects Porset’s essays, reviews, and lectures to highlight her role as an influential thinker, educator, and practitioner. This volume insightfully contextualizes the politics that shaped Porset’s design principles, charts the influence of the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College on her work, and reveals the period’s fusion of local adaptations and modernist principles that made Mexico a major center of modernist design. At a time when many practitioners believed that design could only be modernized by replacing hand craftsmanship with mechanization, Porset valued both approaches for their distinctive qualities and urged others to do the same. Through her writings, she encouraged efforts to catalyze local design communities during a period of rapid technological and social change. With essays by historian Randal Sheppard and design curator and scholar Ana Elena Mallet, an introduction by volume editors Zoë Ryan and Valentina Sarmiento Cruz, and explanatory notes on the people and publishing forums in Porset’s circle, ''Living Design'' makes available works never before published in English, and with only limited circulation in the Spanish language, in order to recover an important and neglected voice in global modernism.

Summary:
"The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness, and scale as a chair." This publication introduces readers to the furniture designs of renowned artist Donald Judd. Initiated by the renovation of his home and studio at 101 Spring Street in New York, and the difficulty Judd later had in furnishing his home in Marfa, Texas, these furn-iture designs exemplify the directness of form and presence for which his artworks are celebrated, as well as offering a distinct and unadorned functionality. In this book they are presented through detailed drawings and breakdowns of materials, alongside colour photography exploring their effect in situ. As well as surveying a central aspect of Judd's work, "Donald Judd Furniture" forms an eloquent mediation on functionality, form, and the possibilities of design in a world of mass-production.

Summary:
This volume presents a visual survey of Donald Judd's permanently installed living and working spaces in New York and Texas. Edited by Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd, it includes newly commissioned and archival photographs presented alongside five essays and drawings for architecture and design by the artist. From 101 Spring Street, a nineteenth-century cast-iron building in Manhattan, to Ayala de Chinati, an extensive ranch in the mountains of western Texas, this book details the interiors, exteriors, and land surrounding the buildings that comprise Judd’s extant living and working spaces stewarded by Judd Foundation. Each space was thoroughly considered by Judd with resolute attention to function and design. From furniture to utilitarian structures that Judd designed himself, these spaces underscore his deep interest in the preservation of buildings and his deliberate interventions within existing architecture.

Summary:
Gunta Stölzl (1897–1983) and the prominent Swiss artist Johannes Itten (1888–1967) were Bauhaus teachers who met in the experimental field during their time at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This volume takes a look at the artistic pairing and assembles in picturesque detail their impressive contributions to Swiss textile art. Few people are aware that Itten made an in-depth study of textile design. Accordingly, this book invites readers to rediscover him as a textile designer in conjunction with Stölzl, who has a place in art history as a "classic of textile art." Both artists left Nazi Germany in the 1930s and explored innovations in ornamental and textile forms. Their work revived textile art in Switzerland with new ways of inventing forms and ornamentation and helped establish a network of modern Swiss textile art.

Summary:
In 1931, the English designer Gerald Summers (1899–1967) and his partner, Marjorie Butcher (1909–96), opened their London shop Makers of Simple Furniture. A small company, they produced made-to-order furniture in limited quantities. Until the firm’s closing in 1940, Makers of Simple Furniture produced hundreds of ingenious furniture designs in plywood. Conceived, in Summers’ words, as “furniture for the concrete age,” this singular body of work shaped the notion of the modern interior in Britain. "Makers of simple furniture" tells for the first time the compelling story of the firm and its dedicated proprietors. Drawing on Butcher’s vivid recollections and a wealth of unpublished material—including never-before-seen images, personal correspondence, workshop documents and illustrated specification sheets—the book reveals the magnitude of their achievements and restores a neglected chapter in the history of modern design.

Summary:
French designer and self-taught architect Jean Prouvé applied manufacturing techniques to the world of art and design, while also maintaining a social consciousness that informed his commissions. His commitment to “logic, balance and purity” led him to create standardized, affordable furniture and portable, packable houses: most notably the Maison Tropicale for use in France’s African colonies. Despite the overtly industrial aspects of his oeuvre, Prouvé’s work is admired and collected the world over for its graceful yet utilitarian simplicity. Constructive Imagination unites over 100 pieces of Prouve’s emblematic furniture and architectural works, bolstered by sketches and other archival material. The glossy bilingual volume includes five unpublished essays on Prouvé, including one by former Museum of Modern Art, New York curator Juliet Kinchin.

Summary:
Henri Jacobs has been conducting an investigation into two-dimensionality that involves the inherently flat nature and recto-verso proposition of a surface. Materialising in various forms, such as plaited paintings, murals, brickwork, wall hangings, ceramic objects, and drawings, the collection of works featured in this book were produced using a variety of techniques. In particular, the Brussels-based artist regularly experiments with plaiting paper, in which old and new works – or figurative and geometric images – are woven together into a two-sided, two-dimensional surface that is image, pattern, texture, and structure all in one.
