Summary:
If we rarely think of walls as works of mesmerizing beauty, Erwin Hauer can hardly be blamed. "Erwin Hauer : Continua" resurrects the extraordinary but little-known work of this Austrian-born sculptor, whose designs of perforated and modular structures are symphonies of measured elegance. Built in Austria, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Holland, the Antilles, Venezuela, and the U.S., Hauer's architectural walls and screens caused a stir when they were erected in the 1950s, but have since been lost in time. This book gathers stunning photographs of these works, many of them now destroyed or no longer accessible. Hauer has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe and his sculptures can be found in many public and corporate collections, including those of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Benson Sculpture Park in Loveland, and the Museum of the National Academy of Design.

Summary:
Renata Bonfanti is one of the most important Italian textile designers. After an epistolary relationship with Bonfanti, the author of the book goes to Bassano del Grappa to meet her personally and develop a photographic project inspired by her work. Created as a story in words and images, it concerns Bonfanti's studies, her working relationships with other personalities of Italian design, her friendships and people dear to her, her house interwoven with memories, the extraordinary laboratory in Mussolente. Domitilla Dardi writes in the introductory essay: “For her, weaving is not an embellishment of architecture or furniture, but a material for the construction of spaces, a complementary element to structures. It is no coincidence that her works will be in dialogue with interiors designed by Mangiarotti, Frattini, Ponti, as integral parts of those design visions."

Summary:
Arne Jacobsen was one of the most influential architects and designers of the twentieth century. His iconic furniture designs have become enduring classics both within and outside Denmark’s borders, but his creativity reached far beyond these well-known works. This book charts Jacobsen’s innovative career and the major role he played in developing the mid-century Nordic aesthetic. Placing him in the midst of the European post-war avant-garde art scene, it sheds new light on the rich variety of Jacobsen’s work – from sleek chairs and light fixtures to elegant textile patterns and watercolour drawings. Hundreds of never-before-seen private photographs of Jacobsen and his many designs also feature throughout, revealing little-known aspects of his fascinating life and work.

A radical pioneer of Bauhaus textile design, Otti Berger created fabrics that fundamentally changed the understanding of what textiles could be and do. A core member of the textile faculty at the Bauhaus alongside Anni Albers and Gunta Stölzl, Berger also was an entrepreneur in the frenzied culture of early 1930s Berlin. Working closely with architects of the New Objectivity movement such as Lilly Reich, Ludwig Hilberseimer and Hans Scharoun, she designed upholstery, wall fabrics, curtains and floor coverings that explored novel production methods, and thereby redefined the relationship between aesthetics and function.

Summary:
Illustrated with color photographs of Hoffmann's masterpieces- on their own and as parts of interiors-this monograph focuses on significant aspects of Hoffmann's career: his early years as a member of the Secessionist Movement and founder of the Vienna Workshops, his role in the intellectual rebellion that took place in Austria; and his progression toward a Modernist ethic. It takes readers through four dazzling interiors designed by Hoffmann and furnished with his signature pieces, including furniture, wall and floor coverings, textiles, lighting, ceramics, glassware and metalwork. The overall effect of these rooms is to be transported to a world in which form marries function, and simplicity and refinement reign supreme.

Red House occupies a singular place in British architectural history : it was the first and only house that was built for designer William Morris, and it was the first independent architectural commission for his friend, Philip Webb. The challenge of furnishing the house inspired Morris and his Pre-Raphaelite friends to found the design firm of Morris & Co., which was the flagship for what was to become the Arts & Crafts movement. Red House captured Morris’ heart. Because of its illustrious first owner, Red House was never forgotten, and a succession of tenants kept Morris’ spirit alive in the house; in 2003, Red House was acquired for the National Trust.
