Summary:
The occupation of space is a trend that can currently be recognized in many creative fields. While furniture and product design were once largely driven by classical industrial and interior design, these disciplines are now also being shaped by the visual culture of graphic design and high-tech production processes. These new influences are contributing to the creation of furniture and interiors that go beyond anything previously designed or imagined. Furnish presents domestic territories that expand upon our current understanding of interior design. The book documents recent work by designers, artists and architects that shows how they are using furniture in pioneering ways: as environment, as art object, as digital-organic growth, as mutation or as insertion. These cutting-edge examples are a sure indicator of the trends that will be influencing interiors as well as hotel, restaurant and club design for the next several years. Furnish also explores the new hybrid nature of occupied spaces, where the domestic enters the realm of fine art and where objects from pimped heirlooms to rapid prototypes find their homes. The book also presents surprising interdisciplinary work, for example, the results of architects engineering tables, graphic designers creating soft furniture and industrial designers making concept art. The experimental spaces that are shown in Furnish are not only interesting for interior designers, but also contain innovative examples of interdisciplinary design work that are relevant and inspiring for anyone working creatively.

Summary:
In the fields of design - interior, product, industrial, fashion and architecture, no single creative element matters more than the materials used to create the product. Materials underpin all of the design criteria implemented by the designers and unequivocally influence the end result. Simply Materials presents a broad selection of objects created using a range of sophisticated new technologies and many born of traditional handcraftsmanship. This book introduces the reader to a variety of materials that can be used to create objects or art forms of great beauty in an array of irregular shapes, sizes and compositions. It demonstrates clearly how composition alone is able to liberate materials from the category of raw junk into materials that arouse great visual interest. With contributors including BOEK (PIET HEIN EEK), Tim Parsons, Sand & Birch Design, Contraforma, and many more. This is the first volume in the groundbreaking new series Simply.. From Victionary.

Not just another book on architecture and design: Atmosphere invites, encourages and motivates. It goes beyond the basic components of form, colour and material to identify and explore seven atmospheric layers that not only exist simultaneously but owing to their fleeting nature can easily merge to form new combinations, over and over again: Almost Alive, Fields of Colour, Drawing the Line, In the Mix, Form Follows Fold, Handicraft 2.0, Down to Earth. Atmosphere is a seven-part exploration of the themes that spark creative work. It delves into a renewed interest in handicrafts, into creases and crinkles as generators of form, into nature as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Learn how designers deal with the chill perfection of CAD and how they counter a period of baroque extravagance. Each chapter is lavishly illustrated with recent work by top designers, architects and artists. Atmosphere will pump oxygen into future projects including yours.

We all have something in our lives that while not obviously valuable, is displayed as though it were a precious and irreplaceable artifact. Inquire about the object's provenance and you'll likely be treated to a lively anecdote about how it came into your host's possession. Keep digging, and you might even crack the code of what the thing really means. "Taking things seriously" is a wonder cabinet of seventy-five unlikely thingamajigs that have been invested with significance and transformed into totems, talismans, charms, relics, and fetishes : scraps of movie posters scavenged from the streets of New York by Low Life author Luc Sante; the World War I helmet that inoculated social critic Thomas Frank against jingoism; the trash-picked, robot-shaped hairdo machine described by its owner as a chick magnet; the bagel burned by actor Christopher Walken, moonlighting as a short-order cook. The owners of these objects convey their excitement in short, often poignant essays that invite readers to participate in the enjoyable act of interpreting things. You'll never look at the bric-a-brac on your shelves the same way again.

Summary:
In Sweden, the Facit brand is as well known as IBM or Olivetti. Based in Atvidaberg, the company produced mechanical calculators, typewriters and office furniture between 1922 and 1998. By the 1970s, the company had grown from a local family business into one of the world’s leading manufacturers. The company-sponsored football team AFF was playing in the first division. But a few years later the Facit organization had disappeared—worn down by global capitalism. ''The Facit Model: Globalism, Localism, Identity'' looks at this peculiar example of corporate modernism through the printed matter produced in Facit’s in-house print shops, culled from FACIT’s archives. Type specimens, manuals, advertising leaflets and product catalogs bear witness to a culture which feels increasingly distant, and yet helped to define many of the codes and forms familiar to us from today’s world of work.
