Pourtant ce maillon de la chaîne alimentaire mérite qu'on s'y attarde. Depuis 60 ans, sa forme est intacte : quelques fines lattes de peuplier agrafées en claire-voie régulent l'humidité des légumes en même temps qu'elle les ventile. Malgré cette apparente pauvreté et son assemblage rudimentaire, elle incarne l'équilibre entre légèreté, résistance et économie de matière. Elle fige ainsi l'évolution des contenants alimentaires depuis les vanneries rurales jusqu'aux cageots ré-utilisables. De ces modèles anciens, son industrie conserve aussi une fabrication organisée selon des schémas vertueux. Une échelle humaine, locale, à proximité des champs et des forêts. Cet ouvrage, consacré au jeune designer Amaury Poudray, s’articule autour de questions concrètes que pose une pratique d’un design raisonné à nos sociétés contemporaines. Rencontres, concept, fabrique et échanges ponctuent ce livre témoin du parcours d’un jeune créateur en prise directe avec les doutes et les interrogations de son temps. Les œuvres produites résultent d’une tension assumée entre forme et fonction, entre savoir-faire et innovation ; la notion de processus expérimental domine ici dans l’acte créateur. Une certaine doctrine de l’action et du déplacement, une immersion dans le domaine technique à tous les stades de l’élaboration mêlées à une éthique de la décroissance sont des éléments caractéristiques du style Poudray qui ne peut s’appréhender que dans la prise en compte de la notion de « networks » et du « Y » dont il a fait son logotype. Réseaux, rhizomes et filets sont autant d’images pour signifier et caractériser ce travail et exprimer les points de vue à la fois structurels, économiques, sociaux et esthétiques à l’œuvre chez Amaury Poudray. Le livre est conçu lui-même comme une expérience proposée au lecteur par sa forme et ses contenus. Une quinzaine d’œuvres sont présentées et discutées. Marie Pok, directrice du Grand Hornu, propose une réflexion critique sur le travail d’Amaury Poudray en prise avec la société contemporaine. Les autres textes — sous la forme d’entretiens avec le designer lui-même et quelques-uns de ses partenaires (fabricants, entrepreneurs, galeristes, éditeurs…) — sont les traces et l’empreinte de ce réseau en action. Il regroupe des dessins préparatoires et des croquis, des photographies de création (Laure Mélone) et des documents.
